September is ending and the “beach body” season is coming to a close. I like many students here at Penn state I’m also getting ready for the infamous and brutal happy valley winter. After spending three years and gaining much unwanted weight during those cold months I approached a friend about weightlifting and just generally keeping in shape.
Like the fitness freak that he is, he recommended a strong weight lifting and running plan but also advised that I explore the world of supplements.
He was especially ill-informed when it came to the xontroversial supplement creatine. Through my own trial and error and relentless research I present to you my own conclusion on this drug.
First off lets clear up that creatine is in fact a naturally producing amino acid in the body. More specifically the amino acid is being made by our kidneys and liver. This amino acid is converted into essentially an energy drink for out muscles during high intensity works outs.
According to a study done by a research team in maryland, they discovered that creatine improves strength and lean muscle mass. the study also concludes that when taken in high dosages the supplement can lead to kidney damage and possibly may even stunt your body’s ability to produce it on it’s own.
It is also stated that when on the supplement one should consult their physician and my own personal recommendation is to drink an adequate water supply.
I have used this supposed miracle supplement before. I have heard all the myths about it, how the gains made is just water weight, its not real muscle etc.etc. I can tell you first hand that you will gain muscle on it, and you will see your energy, strength and physique improve. Although if I was not properly hydrated I would experience foot cramps from time to time. I can only recommend that if any one who is looking to get the most out of their lifts, they would be wise to invest in supplement and even wiser to take it only after thorough research and after they have consulted a physician
I think it’s very important to understand that supplements or some type of recovery formula are crucial when making the decision to exercise in high-intensity forms. You cannot just simply do cardio for an hour and a half with nothing to replace that energy or assist your muscles. Without knowledge, there is no progress.
