Truth behind the diet soda!

Personally, I avoid any kind of soda altogether, but I hear people say all the time that diet pop makes them feel less guilty when indulging in the beverage. Often, I will hear people ordering the extra-large number 4 with a diet coke, and I think to myself, “as if that diet soda makes up for your extra biggie fast food meal!” So I decided to investigate whether regular pop is actually that much worse than the diet, and to my surprise I find out that diet also has many negatives and is not good for you either.

The School of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, researchers discovered that diet soda drinkers had 70% increase in belly fat than regular soda/ and no soda drinkers over an almost 10 year study. The researchers do not automatically blame the diet soda for the drastic increase, but diet soda can lead to other unhealthy decisions.

There are three explanations from Men’s Health that may account for the extra inches as a result of your diet soda addiction. The first explanation is that the artificial sweeteners that diet sodas are notorious for containing can actually ‘dull the taste buds,’ thus causing the consumer to crave foods that are high in calories. This could be where those extra belly inches come from. Another explanation is what I mentioned earlier in the entry, that diet soda is notorious for being ordered along size that fast food meal, making the meal less guilty, but still very bad for you. Studies show that diet drinkers have poor eating habits, and that could account for the extra fat. The last explanation is that diet soda, although free of calories, is not good for you in any aspect. When rats were fed the aspartame, artificial sweetener, they were showing risk factors of diabetes. By the end of the article, they do not claim that diet soda is necessarily responsible for weight increase, but they do suggest to avoid pop altogether and opt for water or other beverages that have nutritional values.

I agree with this and I tell my sisters all the time to stop drinking soda period. I not a big soda drinker, nor diet soda drinker because it doesn’t taste good to me. I find it also funny how people order large unhealthy meals and a diet soda on the side, but I think to myself that that diet soda is doing nothing good to the body. People fail to realize how unhealthy diet sodas can be and how they can cause harm to your internal body. I agree that if you MUST drink any type of soda, diet is the way to go. If you’ve got a craving for that bubbly drink, go for the calorie-free version because simply why not. I try to avoid sodas altogether unless it’s the only option I have at the moment, and I treat myself. I love the sweet fizz of the caramel contraption, but there are SO many healthy alternatives that most people have not even heard of. Sparkling water comes in at least 20 different flavors from what I’ve come across so far, and it satisfies the taste buds even better than the Cola competition. Some of these sparkling water drinks even have added vitamins and nutrients, making it the perfect option. With zero sugar and also zero calories, it’s a guilt free way to get that sweetness without the fat. I am completely against full-calorie, sugary sodas and wish they stayed banned so I wouldn’t have to deal with it when it’s the only drink available when I go out. Here’s an argument for sparkling water that’s quite convincing: http://www.drbriffa.com/2005/01/23/sparkling-water/

I am a big soda drinker, but I do not drink diet sodas because they do not taste good to me. I researched this topic a little more and found that drinking diet drinks has seven side effects that people should know about. Diet drinks can be responsible for people’s kidneys going bad, can screw up your metabolism, can cause weight gain, can cause damage to your DNA, can cause your teeth to rot from the high acids, can cause problems in reproduction, and can even make a person get drunk faster if using diet drinks as a mixer instead regular mixers that contain sugar. I found this information on the link below so feel free to check it out.

I completely agree with this post. I used to drink a ton of soda a couple of years ago and I stopped because I wanted to lose weight. I thought it was a good idea because it was an easy way to get rid of unnecessary calories, but my mom told me drinking diet soda was a good alternative. I never believed her so i did some of my own research and found that diet soda is much worse on your teeth because of the chemicals in it. Another big thing was that diet soda makes your metabolism much slower.
