The Forming Process of Acne

Acne is the worst friend, associate, dream a person can have. It sneaks up on you in your sleep and you’re stuck with it until you find a remedy. There are so many ideas and products out there that say can remove your acne. There are so many products for different types of skin to heal acne. Every commercial there’s a product stressing to use their product. Acne can sometime result from the food you eat, or it can be heredity. However, how is acne really formed? What does the motion process look like as the bumps are forming on your face?

Acne is, according to Medical News Today is a “skin disease that involves the oil glands at the base of hair follicles.” Pimples form on our face and acne creates scars because when our glands are blocked and the oil can’t get out, our pores began to stretch and can rupture. MNT talks about the different types of pimples there are and what causes acne. Comedogenesis is the clogging of a hair follicle or pore. This causes acne formation, so when the oil glands form too much oil the skin surface cells stick together. YouTube has great videos of actually showing how acne is formed on your face, back, neck, etc. What is Acne? shows you how ways the glands burst from oil not being able to pass through. The video also talks about how your hands can sometimes be an associate to why oils can’t come through. Also, Acne in Motion goes into detail about what each part and gland is and how they work in the face when it comes to acne.

So the next time acne attacks you along with pimples, try and find a cream or get antibiotics to help with your skin. However, DO NOT pick it, pinch it, or whatever because your nails hold a lot of bacteria and that causes irritation and scars.

Why does you pee look like that?

I know this may sound a little strange, yet normal for some folks, but have you been checking the color of your pee? If not I think you should start just to be updated. You don’t want your pee to be a dark or too light yellow. I’ve always wondered what causes our pee to change to colors. Also, what are the negative effects of this color change and could it be prevented?

            First off why is urine yellow? No one fully understands it or where the color originates from. Mayo Clinic explains why urine is yellow. Urine is yellow from the pigment, urochrome- a yellow biochemical compound which is found in urine. This is why our urine is yellow. Urine is mainly consisted of water and waste material to flush out the things we have been eating and drinking. Our urine changes color because of the food we sometimes eat, but mainly what we drink. Dr. Melissa talks about some foods that can change the color of your pee. She mentions black berries, beets and food coloring. Also, another factor of your pee turning dark yellow is you aren’t drinking enough fluids-water. Water keeps you hydrated and if you aren’t drinking enough you can serious harm yourself by being dehydrated and having to seek hospital help. You could possibly have blood in your urine don’t know it. An unhealthy bladder can lead to cancer and infections. The next time you check your pee look at this pee chart to determine what color it is. The Cleveland Clinic provides a “The Color of Pee” chart for you to tell you about your body and what you need to do to lighten your pee or un-lighten it.

            So to save trip from the hospital, don’t forget to peek at your urine the next time you pee. Start checking it often to make sure everything looks normal.

Don’t Crave That!!

The weirdest, yet normal, thing I’ve heard a woman crave and eat during her pregnancy was ice cream and pickles, snickers and Pepsi, spaghetti drowned in tomato and hot sauce, and cheese. These combos are quite strange, yet normal for a pregnant woman to crave. However, most women don’t crave these “normal” cravings. Some cravings are over that top that women who aren’t pregnant and regular people wouldn’t eat. The Quick 10 gives a list of 10 strange cravings that pregnant women have and eaten on that list are charcoal, dirt, and even detergent.

            When women crave and eat non-food items, they have an eating disorder called pica. Pica is a craving to eat substances, other than normal foods, and occurs during childhood or pregnancy. It is very serious and can cause serious health problems, especially to your unborn child. According to Pregnancy-Info.net, having pica cravings can harm your unborn child, such as premature labor and even low birth rate. The article also expresses the complications that pica causes to the mother and the baby.

            Pica is serious and even though not only do some pregnant women have this disorder, a lot of regular folks do too. So if you see a pregnant relative or friend eating non-food items and you want her to stop, seek her help. You are saving her and her baby’s life.

Skin Bleaching: The Dangers Of It

 

bbb.jpgA while back as I watching TV and I was flicking through the stations. I came across Tyra bank’s talk show, so I just kept it on the station. The topic that was being discussed was about skin bleaching. I haven’t heard that topic in a while, especially since the story about baseball player Sammy Sosa bleaching his skin. On the show there were a bunch of women admitting to bleaching their skins and one lady in particular states that she bleaches her 3 younger sons’ skin. I couldn’t believe she was using bleach on her kids and wonder if she knew the dangerous effects of bleach?

                Bleach is a liquid substance that is used to make things white or colorless. It used in laundry and for cleaning substances, such as mopping dirty floors, cleaning bathtubs, etc. Bleach is something that should never be used on skin, not only because of the dangerous chemicals, but because it is wrong. Clorox talks about what bleach is used is used for and the chemicals that are in bleach. Some ingredients are sodium hypochlorite and sodium chlorate that can cause burns and boils on one’s skin. The article, The Effects Of Bleach On Skin & Eyes goes into detail about what bleach can do to your face. It states that “If the bleach is left on your skin for an inordinately long period of time, it can cause pigment lightening and permanent tissue damage.” This information tells you that you can seriously damage your skin, even if the bleach is on for a shorter amount of time. Those who do decide to continue on with skin bleaching are missing the information about the side effects of doing such a project. There are many side effects when it comes to bleaching and cancer is one of them. A person can get skin cancer and cataracts, meaning blindness and possible get surgery. Side Effects Of Skin Bleaching talks about the different effects and why some do it.  A whole lot of dangerous factors just for skin bleaching.

                Something the women had in common were they bleach their skin to feel pretty because if their skins were just a few shades lighter, they would feel accepted. It is sad to hear these women talk about it and to see that they include their children. I don’t know a lot about different procedures or better procedure for skin bleaching, but I hope that they look into the dangerous effects of it.

To Fart, or not to Fart….Is the Question.

 

fart.png“It’s not nasty, it’s normal. Everybody farts.” We have heard this for the longest. Even though releasing gas is nasty you have to do it. I remember my mom telling my sisters and me to never hold our gas in and I always wondered why. She stated how it could mess up our insides, so I took a look into it.

            Flatulence is made in the stomach and intestines as your body breaks down food into energy. It releases gas through the digestive system through the anus. There are a lot of things that can cause gas. As embarrassing it might be to let loose, the question is, it worth it? I think it is bad to hold gas because you can really harm your insides and cause internal problems and not think too much of it. HeathLine article, explains some of the causes of having gas. It explains how swallowing air is one of the factors of having gas. They say chewing gum is a cause because you are swallowing gas bubbles as you eat. Also, you dietary choices are also a factor, don’t eat foods that make you gassy or eat less of it.

            Some people always say, “Hold your gas, until we get outside” or “just try and hold it.” What they fail to realize is that they are giving the gassy person the wrong type of help. According to Dr. Ben Kim, holding gas can seriously put your health in danger. When you hold gas, you are blocking and stretching wall cells that can cause bloating. Also, you can have constipation and abdominal pain. Studies also, say this can cause bad breathe, halitosis.

            So the choice is up to you. Would you rather just let is loose right there and then? Say excuse, smile and carry on with your errands? Or would you hold it in and possibly damage your insides and have gas get into your bloodstreams, and suffer abdominal pain all day?

My Poor Dog

 

Shay.jpgWhen the weather starts to change, my sinus starts to act up. However, I am not the only one with this problem, my grandma’s dog has sinus as well. Shay is a Lhasa Apso and when her sinus acts up, she doesn’t know how to behave. She gets very dry skin on her belly which is very scabby because she scratches it constantly. She also drags her butt across the carpet, which is annoying and when she sneezes she sneezes out mucus. It’s the most disgusting, yet saddest thing I’ve ever seen. No one wants to see their dog in pain.

To help Shay, my grandma gives her Benadryl, which is the same medicine my aunt gives her dog. I know that Benadryl is known for causing drowsiness and helping with runny nose, itching, watery eyes and other symptoms from having allergies. I know she is giving this to her to help her, but I wonder, is this bad for her?

Benadryl is an antihistamine that is commonly used in both people and pets. According to different articles, Benadryl is an okay medicine to use. In the article, Can You Give a dog Benadryl, explains why it is okay to give your dog Benadryl. It states that it helps relive their allergies and other factors like eye infections, skin irritations, and fleas. However, there are side effects of Benadryl. In the article,Pet MD, it states how dangerous Benadryl can be to animals, such as hyper excitability in cats, loss of appetite and even diarrhea in animals. I wonder is Benadryl the best way to relieve animals allergies and sinus?

 

Is Posture really good for the brain?

“Sit up straight!”

 

We’ve all heard this line since we were in elementary school. The saying never gets old. This is said to us because we are either slouching over our desks or using our hand as a headrest. When one has good posture, it looks good on interviews and professional. I wonder if teachers ever noticed that as many times they have told us to fix our posture, did they know that they were helping us retain information?

Posture is not only good for the body, but it is great for your spine. Slouching a lot and not standing straight can lead to a bend in your spine. Posture helps with your learning and according to the article Practice Good Posture for Better Memory Retention, “posture…can play a significantly role in how well you learn new things”. The study conducted in Florida State University, found that posture has improved memory because they call it a “congruent”.  The part of the brain that contains the memory part is the cerebrum, which has two halves, right and left. In the brain you have a process is which your memory is retained in your mind. Posture helps because it helps tick off memories. If you are in a good stance and learning something, you are more likely to remember what that was instead of you in a bad posture.

 

So think about it, they next time you want to remember something and retain it, will your posture be right?

My name is Dalila Lewis and I am a sophomore here at Penn State. I am enrolled in the College of Communications majoring in Broadcast Journalism and a possible business minor. I am from the City of Brotherly Love!! Yes, Philadelphia, PA. For those who would like to visit Philly and don’t know where to start, here a link to help you plan your trip: Philadelphia and the Countryside. So I suggest all those who haven’t been to Philly, go and visit. As I furthered my education here at Penn State, I didn’t expect it to be a lot different from living in Philly. I knew Penn State was a big campus and living there I’ll feel small, but Philly, to me is sort of like Penn State. We’re a huge city, we love our sports hard, and we love to party.

I am taking this course because 1). I heard one of the best teachers teach this course and he is awesome. His name is Andrew Read and if you don’t know who I am talking about read his blogs, Andrew Read, and check him out on Rate my Professor. 2). I am taking this course because I have a lot of unanswered/ curious questions. Whether aliens do exist, how long will it be until the countries separate from each other, and because of global warming will winter still be considered a season even though the days will shorten? I feel I can get most of my questions answered in class as we move on with the material.

 

I find it completely funny that I am not studying science. As sad as it seems I LOVED science in middle and high school. Then I took AP Physics and that was the worst AP class I have ever taken, and because of that I strayed away from science. although there doesn’t go a day where I think that I can study science, I guess I am just scared. Science is a lot to take on and I feel as though if I major or minor in it, it will take a lot of my time up. hey, who knows, maybe I’ll stray back to science in some sort of way. time will only tell.
