Nike Fuel Bands: The New Fitness Tracking Technology

Around this time last year, my dad went to a health conference with the company he works for, General Electric. At the conference were a number of other companies, all which were presenting some sort of new health and fitness product. One of these companies included Nike, who was presenting their new device called Nike FuelBand. Nike FuelBands are “bracelets” that you wear throughout the day from when you wake up to when you go to sleep, which track your energy output that day. You figure out a daily goal, and the FuelBand tracks your active movement and displays them as “fuel points” in which you can achieve in order to meet your goal. Everyone at the conference got these bracelets for free, and my dad has been addicted ever since.

Although my dad was instantly sold by the Nike FuelBand, I was not so easily convinced of the accurateness of these devices. My question was, “why would someone pay $150 for a speedometer in fancy packaging?” After some research, however, I learned a lot more about how these bands actually go about tracking your activity, and it is not just the amount of steps you take. On the nike website, the page for FuelBands states that “NikeFuel is a single, universal way to measure all kinds of activities- from your morning workout to your big night out. Uniquely designed to measure whole-body movement no matter your age, weight or gender, NikeFuel tracks your active life”. If you’re wondering about how exactly these fit in to your daily routine and measure your activity, the video called A Day With Nike+ FuelBand tracks three different people throughout a day wearing the FuelBand.
Not only are Nike FuelBands great for tracking your daily activity, but they are great for motivating you to reach your daily activity goal. There is a Nike FuelBand app in which FuelBand users can upload their daily activity, set new goals, unlock rewards and surprises for beating your goals, share your success and even see other users around them and connect with each other in order to possibly workout together! You can also plug your FuelBand into your computer and the software will take all of your data from your FuelBand and generate charts and graphs that show your activity history and activity trends! To me, this is a huge appeal of the FuelBand, as seeing this information in front of you on a computer screen can help you understand your progress and motivate you more!

Obviously, Nike FuelBands are not yet perfect, as they have only been out for about a year or so, but they keep on improving, as a new updated version of the FuelBand will be coming out in 2014! This new technology, as small as it seems, is really a key contributor to a new era of personal health and fitness devices. Will you join in the new fad and consider getting a Nike FuelBand? I think I just might.

Cars That Drive Themselves: Not So Far Off!

As a little kid, when I was asked to think about what life would be like in the future, flying cars always came to mind. When you were a little kid, did you ever think “I can’t wait to have a car that drives for me?” Not as likely, but it’s definitely a possible concept! I remember watching the James Bond 007 movies as a kid and seeing all of the cool technology that James Bond got for his job, like pens that have cameras, night vision sunglasses, and of course cars that drove themselves! I always wondered when I would see things like these in real life, and now cars that drive themselves have turned into a reality!

What car company is the first to put out a autonomous car, you ask? Only the car brand known world-wide for their superior safety and caution in their car models- Volvo. An article from The Verge titled Volvo Speeds Ahead with Autonomous Cars on Swedish Roads by 2017 explains to readers how Volvo is going about creating these futuristic cars. Volvo is not the only car company that has begun to think about autonomous cars though. Nissan, as well as other brands, also have plans to build these cars as well– Volvo’s plan just puts them a couple years ahead of their competitors in terms of release dates.
Volvo is partnering with Swedish authorities to initiate a trial run of their new autonomous car models in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, called Drive Me. With the Drive Me trial run, 100 of these cars will be distributed to specially selected drivers in order to test them out. Wondering how this will all work? The article states that “The Drive Me project will span every type of roadway, from congested city center streets to fast-moving freeways, in order to test the cars in all the common scenarios.” This Drive Me project will be especially useful in order to make sure that these cars are 100% safe and reliable before Volvo offers them up to the public, so that people do not get hurt because of an error by the car.
If you would like to learn more about how these autonomous cars will work and how Volvo plans to execute their Drive Me project in Sweden, I suggest you check out this video that Volvo put out as an overview of their Autonomous Driving Pilot Project! What do you think, would you ever be able to fully trust a machine such as these Volvos with your life? I’m not so sure yet.

Artificial Meat: A Curse or a Blessing?

Have you ever had a veggie burger? Chances are, the answer is yes. Veggie burgers are are essentially a soy and vegetable product with added spices that attempt to mimic the flavor and texture of a real meat burger. Many people only think of veggie burgers when it comes to artificial meat, however, nowadays there are a TON of other options up for grabs. A veggie burger is no longer your only option, stores now sell “meatless” chicken nuggets, bacon, breakfast sausages, ground beef, hot dogs, and more! There is now much more to chose from, and these options are also getting closer and closer to mimicking the actual texture and taste of the meat product, so you can hardly even tell it’s not meat! Vegetarians and non vegetarians alike are beginning to realize how incredible the new technology is becoming for the meatless meat market.

So why is this so important, you ask? Well, a lot of people are not aware of this, but the mean industry creates a lot of problems for our planet. Traditional chicken, beef, and pork production devours resources and creates waste. Besides the obvious fact that meat production eliminates billions of animals every year, there are many other resources that go into producing the meat you eat. For example, all of those animals have to be fed!
The article Can Artificial Meat Save The World? talks about a specific company named Beyond Meat which is has created “chicken strips” made of soy and pea proteins and amaranth. These chicken strips are the closest thing to real chicken strips you can get. They pull apart like chicken strips, taste and feel just like them. And it gets even better! Not only are these chicken strips almost identical to the real thing, they are healthier! While having the same amount of protein as real chicken, they contain zero cholesterol, saturated or trans fats. Producing these fake chicken strips also has a much tinier environmental footprint as real chicken. For example, “Where one pound of cooked boneless chicken requires 7.5 pounds of dry feed and 30 liters of water, the same amount of Beyond Meat requires only 1.1 pound of ingredients and two liters of water.”

The creators of Beyond Meat aren’t the only people who really believe that artificial meat will greatly benefit the world around us. Fox News wrote an article titled Artificial Meat May Feed The Planet, Scientists Say that explains how with an ever growing population and dwindling crop supply, artificial meat may be the only way that we will be able to feed all of those people. According to a group of leading international scientists, “growing artificial meat in vats may be the best way to feed an expected population of 9 billion in 2050 without destroying the earth”. What do you say, would you consider giving up real meat if the artificial replacement mimicked it exactly?

Guinness is Good for You!

As promised in my last blog, I have decided to write a blog on the health benefits of Guinness. My family is very Irish and always have plenty of Guinness on hand because according to my grandparents and my great grandparents, “a Guinness a day keeps the doctor away”. According to the article, Beer With Benefits: 4 Reasons to Drink Guinness, my family has been right all along, there are a bunch of reasons why the beer is good for your health!

The first reason is that drinking Guinness in moderation can reduce your risk of heart disease, kidney stones and certain types of cancer. The most amazing thing that I found on this topic is that “A pint of the black stuff a day may work as well as a low dose aspirin to prevent heart clots that raise the risk of heart attacks”. The fact that something that has been around for ages and that is as simple as a pint of beer is awesome to me. Who needs aspirin? In an article done by BBC title Guinness Could Really be Good for You, the author describes a study that was done on dogs that had narrowed arteries similar to those of heart disease. They gave stout to some dogs and lager to other dogs. The dogs that were given Guinness had reduced clotting in their blood, but not the dogs given lager.
Besides the fact that Guinness helps prevent and reduce heart disease, kidney stones and blood clots, Guinness is actually relatively low calorie, has lots of minerals in it, and is beneficial for breast feeding mothers to drink. People think that because Guinness is a stout, or a dark beer, it is packed with calories. Wrong. Guinness actually only has 170 calories per pint, which compared to many other beers that aren’t even stouts is quite low! Guinness also contains iron, calcium, phosphates, vitamin B, and fiber. Who knew a beer could be so healthy!? The last thing that the article stated about the benefits of Guinness is that  “A small amount of alcohol increases blood stimulation, which promotes milk production. Guinness in particular promotes milk production with its high levels of  Vitamin B and Iron”. This really intrigues me because they said you’re not really supposed to drink when you’re breast feeding, but according to this article, a little bit doesn’t hurt! Ladies, would you consider drinking Guinness to help milk production while you’re breast feeding?

Red Wine=Liquid Gold?

Growing up, my parents were very lenient and open about alcohol, as long as it was in our own home or I was with them. Coming from a very Irish family, I grew up with my grandparents offering my Guinness on holidays when I was all but 14 years old, saying “if you want to be healthy and live a long life like me, you better drink your Guinness!”. It seemed like such an odd thing to say to me back then, when I was being taught how terrible alcohol is for you in health class at school. However, there has recently been a lot of research on the benefits of some alcohol, and my grandparents have been proven right! Guinness, along with red wine, actually have a lot of health benefits. In this article I will only be focusing on the health benefits of Red Wine, but don’t you fret, I will be doing an article on the health benefits of Guinness next!

The article I found titled Can Red Wine Really Heal Cancer And Prolong Your Life? was actually very interesting. The title caught my eye because, well, who doesn’t love wine? I must admit that every time I come home during college breaks, I always look forward to indulging in some pinot nior with my mom. However, I have now learned that maybe I don’t have to call it “indulging” anymore! In the article, author Dan Nosowitz explains that the compounded called “resveratrol”, which is found in the skin of grapes (hence why it is only found in red wine) is what makes it so healthy. He states that “Studies have indicated that it serves as an antioxidant, that it has anti-tumor properties, that it can help you live longer, and that it may be responsible for the ‘French paradox’ (the French have a high-fat diet and yet low instances of health disease).” How great does that sound!? Well, just like a lot of other things, all though this sounds like well, a miracle, there’s a catch!

Can you guess what the catch is? The amount of resveratrol you actually need to reap the benefits. In studies done on rats and mice, they used about two to five grams. Do you know how much resveratrol is in a five ounce glass of wine? About 0.0008 grams. What a let down! In order to get roughly two grams of resveratrol from drinking red wine, you would have to drink about 2,500 glasses (roughly 493 bottles) of wine, and in which case you would be dead. But hey, if you’re still interested in learning more about possible health benefits of resveratrol in red wine, because, well maybe one day they can figure out how to make wine have a higher concentration of the compound, check out this article titled Red Wine and Resveratrol by About.com!

Can Drone Shipping Actually Happen?

Recently, my friend told me about this new fad called “drone shipping” that Amazon has been buzzing about. Amazon is calling this new technology in which they would like to reveal by 2015 “Amazon Prime Air”. This is a concept in which Amazon would receive an order online, an employee would place it in a plastic box and then it would be transported on a conveyer belt to get picked up by a small drone that will then fly it directly to the persons house. If you would like to see exactly how Amazon pictures “Amazon Prime Air”, check out this video! Almost looks too good to be true, right? Well, it may be.

In a recent article done by Popular Science, Kelsey Atherton explains why Amazon’s plan for delivery drones isn’t quite realistic. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos says that Amazon’s drones could begin delivering packages as early as 2015. However, Atherton says that a more realistic date would be around 2020, considering all of the setbacks they will encounter. As stated by the Federal Aviation Administration, drones can only be used for commercial purposes if the pilot keeps the drone within eyesight at all times. Atherton says “Before Amazon distribution centers can send drones on deliveries, the FAA must figure out how to safely integrate all these new flying objects into U.S. airspace.” This is just one of the issues involved with Amazon’s Prime Air. Currently, most aircrafts use the “see and avoid” principal, meaning that if they see something in the air, they will avoid it, following the general rules of the air. However, drones do not have a human onboard that can physically see other objects in air around them, so this could cause some issues I’d say!!

On the other hand, the idea of drone shipping that Amazon’s Prime Air conveys is definitely something that could be very beneficial in the future. Can you imagine how much easier your life would be to just have the ability to order something online and be able to walk outside your front door around an hour later and see it sitting there? It would certainly make things so much more convenient. Whether the concept come out in around a year or around six years, it is definitely something to look forward to, and gets you thinking, how much more could you accomplish through the accessibility of Amazon Prime Air?

Old Enough to go to War but Can’t Buy a Drink?

As we all know, Penn State has a huge drinking culture. All of you are probably used to seeing girls in high heels stumbling down Beaver Ave, drinking jungle juice and natty light, and waking up at the crack of dawn football Saturdays to start tailgating. Although drinking and partying does not define us here at Penn State, it is a big aspect of the PSU college experience. However, have you ever wondered what it would be like going to school at Penn State or even in general if the drinking age was still 18? Our lives would be completely different…in a good way.

I could go on and on about all the reason why every state in this country should implement an 18 year old drinking age, but that would take more than just this blog. So, I will limit myself to why having an 18 year old drinking age would benefit both the establishment of Penn State and the students of Penn State.

1. School-Run Parties and Social Events

Yes, I know most of you are thinking to yourselves right now, “Is this girl crazy?” It sounds awful and boring at first, but think about what it was like when your parents went to school. The schools put on a lot of parties for students. I can remember my mom telling me stories of her college throwing giant parties in the lobbies of residence halls, cafeterias, commons areas and banquet halls. She told me each one of these parties had multiple kegs of beer, loud music, dancing, cool lights, and food. I remember laughing as she recalled stumbling from the elevator to her dorm room after these parties. I don’t know about you, but that sounds PRETTY prime to me….

2. Much Less of a Chance of Getting Alcohol Poisoning and Drugged

Okay, I’ll start off with alcohol poisoning. There have been countless times when I have seen people take a ton of shots, shotgun beers and then chug Franzia all within a matter of an hour in order to pregame. Whether it be a party or a football game, the point is to get as drunk as possible as fast as possible, which has some serious risks. As fun as it is to get drunk and have fun with your friends, we as college students shouldn’t have to practically kill our bodies to have fun. Lowering the drinking ago would drastically reduce the need for us to binge drink for the following reasons…

  • Beaver Stadium would be able to sell beer in the stadium, which would eliminate students’ need to drink as much as they can before going into the stadium, making drinking safer
  • Students could go to the bars as well as apartments, houses and frats. This eliminates the need to drink as much as you can at the first place that you go to for the night in fear that they will run out of alcohol, also making the drinking habits of students safer
  • Students would be able to go out and purchase their own alcohol to consume instead of having to drink jungle juice at frats and risk getting roofied. Ex: Pregame with friends before going out then drink beer at a frat
  • Just better quality alcohol in general!!

3. The Penn State Social Scene and Culture would be More Unified

Now, I am in a sorority, and I have to admit, Greek life in general is very inclusive. A lot of Greeks stick to themselves and don’t talk to people who aren’t Greek. A lot of times, people in Greek life end up doing the same thing over and over again every night. Pregame, Social, Party, Late Night, etc. etc. I’ve got to admit, after a while, it gets boring! If the drinking age was 18, a lot of people in Greek like would go to the bars as well and not spend all of their time in fraternities. The students at Penn State would begin to spread out their social lives throughout all aspects at Penn State and begin to get to know each other better!

As you can tell, this is only a very small glimpse into what life would be like if the drinking age was lowered. If you want to find out about all the pros and cons of lowering the drinking age, check out this article on procon.org!

Eating Local 101: What you Need to Know

If you read my initial blog post, you know that I am very into eating local and supporting local farms. For me, this is the most important aspect of my life that involves the environment. Some peoeple put emphasis on recycling, others on eating only organic or no meats. I truly believe that eating local foods is what will help us “save the world”.  For a lot of people, taking that step towards eating local is a difficult one. It’s so easy to just go to the supermarket and pick up a container of Tyson chicken breasts. However, in this post I will show you how eating local isn’t as hard ad you think!

Look up Local Farmers Markets

The best website out there for locating farms near you is called Local Harvest. Here, you can look up anything from farmers markets, meat processors, grocery stores, restaurants, and actual farms near you. It is the easiest process ever! From here, you will be able to find whatever you are looking for. I find that this website is best used for finding farmers markets and farms. If you are skeptical about finding farmers markets near you, don’t fret, I can assure you, there will be at least five within a 10-15 mile radius of you! With just this website alone, you can take care of all of the produce you need, as well as some meat (with the meat processors option) and sometimes even dairy.

What you Tend to not Find at a Farmers Market

Okay, so you have all of your produce and some meats and dairy taken care of. Now it’s time to talk about what you (typically) cannot find at a farmers markey, which is everything besides those. For example, pasta, granola bars, cereal, juice, etc. What I reccommend for finding the most local and sustainable products is as follows…

1. Look up “natural food stores” near your location: you will most of the time be pleasantly surprised to find that there is one near you!

2. Whole Foods

3. Trader Joes

4. Fresh Market

Typically, all four of these vendors will carry a much larger variety of local (and organic) foods than your normal grocery store. A lot of times, they will be specials or they will be in a different spot than you would normally find them, with a note written next you it saying where it is from near you!

A list of Organic Products that I Enjoy

These brands use small, fair-trade farms and farmers for creating their products

  • Applegate Farms (meat, usually frozen)
  • Amy’s Kitchen (frozen meals)
  • Earthbound Farm (mostly fruits & veggies)
  • Simply Organic (grains, sauces, dressings, beans)
  • Organic Valley (milk, eggs, butter, cheese)

Finally, I want to leave you with one last thing that I have found very helpful. Yale did a Sustainable Food Purchasing Guide that goes over everything you need to know about finding reliable sources of local and sustainable food. It’s an AWESOME guide for beginners in the sustainable food world. I hope this article was helpful and that it convinced at least some of you to try to start eating local, sustainable and organic!

There’s an App for That!

Have you ever searched for that perfect app and been so happy when you found just what you were looking for? Whether it be a recipe finder app, a game, or a picture editor, there is literally an app out there for almost everything. After being an iPhone user for four years now, I have put together my list of my favorite apps that I think are most useful and also an app that I can’t find but would LOVE to see.

My Favorite Apps

Epicurious
Epicurious is the best recipe finder app that you will ever find. It is reliable because it takes recipes from magazines such as Bon Apptit, Gourmet, Better Homes and Gardens and Self. You can then search through their database by ingredient, type of dish, cuisine, season or occasion, or dietary consideration. After finding a recipe you like, you can favorite that recipe and then add it to your shopping list, in which you can look at every ingredient (and amounts) that you need!
TripAdvisor City Guides
Have you ever been in a foreign country and wanted to look up a cool restaurant to grab lunch at but not been able to because of data and internet restrictions? If so, this app is for you. With this app, you simply download the city guide for whichever city you’re visiting before you get there. After this, you can look up hotels, restaurants, things to do and even walking tours all without 3G or Wifi! If you’d like to get an idea of what this app is like, check out the original Trip Advisor website
Songza
I know there are a lot of avid Pandora users out there, but I’m here to tell you that Songza is, in fact, the better music streaming app. With Songza, you can choose between playlists based on many different categories. This categories include genre, mood, the activity that you’re doing at that moment, and decades. So, say you’re feeling sad and want music to match your mood, you just pick “sad” and pick any playlist. Ex: “Cry Yourself to Sleep”. My personal favorite playlist is “Girls just Wanna Have Fun” in which I play when getting ready to go out. They also have a website that you can check out here!
App I want to be Invented

Roadtrip Restaurant Guide
There have been many times when my friends and I have been in the car driving for long periods of time such as to Vermont (from CT) or to the beach in RI and wanted to stop and get dinner someplace delicious. It is very hard to just look up restaurants near you and then try to figure out how far they are from you. What I’m picturing is putting your destination and having restaurants pop up on your route!
NOTE: No stealing my idea please! OR if you know of an app like this please let me know!
I hope that you all take the time to go download my favorite apps on the iPhone that I know most of you have and let me know if you think they’re as awesome as I think they are!
Also, if you’re interested in creating an app yourself check out this awesome website that will let you create an app for free

Craving to Carve

I’m sure most of you are wondering what my title means. Carve? Carve meat? No. Carve snow. Or in the words of Google dictionary

SKIING: make (a turn) by tilting one’s skis on to their edges and using one’s weight to bend them so that they slide into an arc

Where it all Started

I started skiing when I was four years old. My dad took me to our local Connecticut ski mountain and taught me using the good old “human leash” in which I was attached using a harness and my dad was holding onto the ropes as he skied behind me. He taught me to “pizza pie” and turn down the bunny slope instead of going straight down at 100 MPH and crashing into the innocent folks at the bottom of the slope. I hated it at first, because why would anyone purposefully put their body through that kind of physical and mental torture?? However, after a few years I started to really get the hang of it. Ever since then, I have been a complete ski-aholic, I like to say. Up until I got to college, I spent each and every one of my winter weekends skiing in Vermont.

Me – Skiing = Maniac

So you can only imagine what kind of withdrawals I went through my freshman winter out here in the middle of Pennsylvania…pure torture. It is the first weekend of December, 2012. I’m sitting in my dorm room on Facebook when I come across my brother’s album titled “Ski Season has Begun”. Countless pictures of my entire family taking advantage of the almost empty slopes on opening weekend in Stratton, VermontMy stomach dropped. All I wanted to do was get on a bus straight to Vermont…but of course we’re in State College, so that wasn’t going to happen. It was then that I began to realize that skiing isn’t just something I enjoy doing, it’s something that I need to do, for my own sanity that is, as I’m what you would call an “adrenaline junkie”.

But Why?

Being an adrenaline junkie basically means I’m addicted to the rush that I get when I’m skiing. But why skiing you ask? It’s that feeling of being on top of a mountain, looking around at all the other mountain peaks around you and then looking down the ski slopes to see the tiny little specks that are cars and people and houses. The feeling is like no other. When I look around and smell the crisp mountain air it’s like I have the whole world at the tip of my fingers and nothing can hurt me. As this article on the health benefits of skiing says, “There’s no place like outside for getting fresh air, a substance that cleans lungs and mind like nothing else known to humans. And skiing, whether on a tree-lined trail or atop a sunny ridge, is an ideal way to pump fresh air and blood while soaking up sunlight.”

And that, my friends, seems like the perfect thought to leave you all with today.
