What Can Result From Concussions in Football?

This is a topic that has been well debated in the sports world for the past few years, concussions. We have seen many former football players lead troubling lives past retirement and a lot of this is believed to have been a result of concussions. A concussion according to this article is when the head receives a blow or is hit in a way that rattles the brain and causes damage to it. There can be damage to the cells or can severely damage parts of the brain depending on the severity of the concussion. It can end up being very traumatic as the person may never be the same again, and in some rare cases the swelling of the brain after a concussion is so bad that death is a result.

But the most debated concussion topic is related to football. The most profitable sport in America has a very big issue and that is concussion. After numerous league rule changes they now think that they have the best way to keep players safe. There used to be no rules on such matters and led to numerous concussions league wide and eventual brain trauma that could last their entire lives. The long last effects of these concussions can be huge and last some people’s entire lives and in some cases lead to death and suicide. But how can this be prevented?

The league has taken great steps toward this but more has to be done. In this article by the NFL it explains many of the new concussion based rules. If someone is suspected to having a concussion they should immediately be removed for the entire game no question, and taken to the locker room for tests. Players are put back into the game if they may or may not have a concussion from some quick tests, which is ridiculous. Multiple concussions can lead to serious brain issues and if they happen close in time to each other the results can be exponentially worse. Explained by these doctors here the results are not to be taken lightly. Also, the helmets should be more protective. With modern technology there is no reason a helmet that is more concussion proof cannot be made. The NFL can most certainly afford it and should invest in it.

The results of concussions in football are monstrous and can be decreased if the right actions take place. The NFL has taken some great steps in the right direction but they need to do more. Concussions are too serious to be taken lightly and until they are completely eliminated they should be doing everything in their power to try and stop them. football-head-shot-collision

To disagree with what I said earlier football concussions may not be as much of the league’s fault than due to the player’s. They are the people who risk their lives playing that dangerous sport. So in the end the NFL may not be responsible to a degree because of the player’s choice to participate.
