This is a very well thought out issue brief proposal and I like your ideas. I think that mental health is a very important issue. I think that it may be easier for you to focus in on one specific region or district in particular so that you can focus more on specific factors of that specific place on the mental health issues. This would also make it easier for your advocacy campaign to target a particular issue.
You’re totally right. I really need to narrow down my topic to be able to focus it to one specific area. Possibly one local school district? Thank you for the advice.
I think this is a good idea and plan for an issue brief. The problem is localized, and I think it may be most effective if you make your plan based on a specific school district; this would allow implementation to occur quickest, and most easily allow data to be gathered regarding its success. I think it is most important to advocate this to parents. I don’t think many school districts would be opposed to increasing mental health discussions in school, but as you said, many parents are unaware of how serious this issue is.
Yes, parents would be a good target audience comparing to school district because they can offer more personalized support to their children. I agree with you that I need to choose a specific area or school district to focus my issue brief on. Thanks!
I like the direction that you are taking with your issue brief. For specific research and support, I think that there are plenty of statistics out there that revolve around the availability of mental health resources. Coupled with biological/psychological research, I think that you’ll have a strong argument for your issue regarding mental health.
I didn’t think about the biological aspect of research, but more upon the psychological aspect. Thanks for the idea!
Hi, Sylvia. You received a wealth of good advice above. I would just make sure you do a lot of research about what is possible in the schools and in the communities (perhaps offered through the schools) and come up with the most attractive and effective plan based on those models.
Yes, I agree with you that there are limitations to what school can actually do to resolve this issue. I will look into current examples of what schools are implementing towards mental health as well as what communities can do. Thanks for the advice!
I like what you have so far for your issue brief! In addition to what everyone above said, I would look past just increasing mental health awareness and really focus on the importance of mental health resources. I imagine the difference in access that students have is incredibly disproportionate.
