Reebok has just released a new “weird” commercial according to Adage.com. After seeing this headline I immediately decided to check out how weird this commercial really was….
After watching it, my reaction to it was, wow that actually was really weird. But, Reebok successfully advertised their new shoes having Cardi B rocking them.
The ad opens with Cardi and a friend in a hair salon. The two are gossiping about a boy when Cardi B notices her shoe is untied. The camera then zooms in on Cardi’s hands and the viewers watch Cardi’s nails grow to a freakishly long length, crawling down her legs, and finally reaching the shoes. Once her nails reach to her shoes the camera gets close up to what the sneakers look like, and then the nails tie the shoe.
By using Cardi B in the advertisement Reebok is able to reach different markets. People who wear Reebok, people who need sneakers, and Cardi B fans. Using famous people in ads have been around for ages and is a successful tactic because people tend to copy what their favorite public figures are wearing and doing.
In the scene Cardi is seen wearing a reebok t shirt under her hair salon cape. Reebok is advertising more than just the shoes in the commercial by also showing the t shirt. At the end of the ad one of the works walks to the door and flips the closed/open sign, on the back of the sign says, “Sport the unexpected” which is recognized as the tagline of this ad.
In the Adage.com article the author compares how this ad is different than your average “Just Do It” advertisement, making it appeal to a different audience. The funky, new approach Reebok is creating for their new line is bound to be successful.
