Carnival of Hope 2023 – October 10

After a successful Carnival of Hope in 2022, we are back for another year of excitement and fun. As per our tradition, we will once again, weather permitting, be on the Mall Walk to celebrate life and friendship as we learn and reflect about cancer. The fun starts officially at 12pm and runs until 1:30pm. Learn more about Breast Cancer and stop by with your friends for fun and games. There will be a basket raffle to aid local survivors in their fight, along with some educational tables and multiple free raffle entries. Keep checking here for more information on the event.

Survivor Tea Postponed

Grief is hard….it’s unpredictable and relentless.  It can disappear and give you a sense that you are finally “over it,” only to reappear with a force that brings you to your knees.  We’re sorry to announce that our Survivor Tea event for Wednesday has been postponed.  Grief has requested that our speaker take care of herself, first.  Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.Thank you all for signing up and we hope to see you later this year. We do plan to revisit the topic and will be extending out our programming to reflect the gravity of the issue in our community.
In the meantime, we encourage any interested in learning about Schuylkill County’s Suicide prevention resources to check out the Schuylkill County Suicide Prevention Task Force at https://www.schuylkillvision.com/suicide-prevention-task-force.html and also remember that the Penn State does have crisis intervention resources. The extract below is from the Penn State Schuylkill Counseling page. If you know someone in need, please forward them information. Let us continue to spread hope.

The Counseling Office is typically open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The counselor works on an appointment basis, but in most instances, the counselor should be able to respond to a mental health emergency during those hours. If a particularly urgent situation (for example, suicidal thoughts or sexual assault) presents itself during counseling office hours, a student can contact our office and report the need for immediate attention. We will then make every effort to respond promptly. However, crisis situations do not always occur during the work hours of our staff.

Survivor Tea Making A Comeback

Spring 2020 changed how many organizations and events were handled. The Survivor Tea that year was no different and survived as a remote panel. Unfortunately, getting people back together has been harder than many figured. We are now planning a come back better event for 2022. As part of Penn State Schuylkill’s sustainability efforts, we will be hosting a Survivor Tea this April. We will be coming together to support and learn more about mental health issues and suicide and how we can further support members of our community. Look for more details as the event draws closer.

Carnival of Hope 2021 a Success

Beautiful warm weather and lots of happy eyes were out on October 14 for the 3rd Annual Carnival of Hope. Tables lined the Mall Walk and brought together the community with faculty, staff and students for games, raffles, and education. This year an abundance of donated gift baskets extended the basket raffle offerings and provided a wide range of offerings for raffle participants to win. Participants were able to remember loved ones with chalk writing on the Mall Walk and send best wishes to cancer patients at the Simon Kramer Cancer Institute. Additionally, this year there were multiple free raffles for food prizes. Among the day’s highlights included the Softball team getting pied thanks to some last minute donations.

Join Penn State Schuylkill for our 3rd Annual Carnival of Hope on October 14, 2021 from 11:30am-1:30pm.

Help us raise funds to aid cancer patients in their fight through the help of the Simon Kramer Cancer Institute.
