Title
The Pink Panther- Discovering antibiotics in Schuylkill County
Abstract
What are antibiotics? Antibiotics are a medicine that destroys
microorganisms that affect the body in a harmful way.
Antibiotics are given worldwide for many sicknesses including
strep throat, UTI, whooping cough etc. But many antibiotics
aren’t taken or work as given. This is antibiotic resistance
when an antibiotic isn’t working due to may reasons such as
the microorganisms learning ways to protect themselves. This
could be for many reasons such as more exposure of these
antibiotics (not being taken as should or used too much) and
resistance becomes a bigger problem. Looking for new
bacteria that can work as an antibiotic in soil can help solve
our problem and lead the future into a new direction for
antibiotics. The Small World initiative takes part into this
project which adds onto their project into finding antibiotics in
soil and the Tiny Earth project which also does the same.
