Title
Digging for Gold – The search for antibiotics in soil samples
Abstract
Antibiotic resistance is a large threat that is altering the effectiveness of antibiotics around the world. Due to this problem, discovery of new antibiotics is imperative, as well as society being educated on how to properly use antibiotics. The research we have done led by the Tiny Earth/Small World Initiative includes both learning about antibiotic resistance and contributing to the search for new antibiotics. The journey began by first choosing an area on campus to collect a soil sample from. After completing a few steps to isolate our bacteria one special sample was chosen. This sample was then put through multiple different tests using many kinds of medias and techniques all leading to learning something knew about the characteristics and behavior of our bacteria.

Mini Bio
My name is Marissa Martinez. I am a second-year nursing student studying at the Penn State Schuylkill Campus. Throughout the MICRO107 course I have been conducting research on a soil sample along with my fellow students. The hope while doing this research was discovering some antibiotic properties within our sample. I have learned many things while taking this course, from information about how antibiotics are discovered and used to all the different techniques we have used to test our bacteria. Prior to this class my information about antibiotics was more limited than I thought, now I will be able to use all this new knowledge as my future career as a nurse.
