Getting Started with Email Setup

Penn State Office 365 Email Access Options

Office 365 exists in two versions:

  1. WEB APP VERSION – The cloud-based web version is accessible from any device with a web browser.
  2. DESKTOP APP VERSION – In this version, the apps are downloaded to your computer.

There are some differences in features and functions between these versions but all can be used to check your Penn State Office 365 email account, depending on your preferences.

Office 365 Desktop App Installation

Desktop versions of Outlook and Office 365 will be installed as follows:

  • The RIIT Group will install Penn State’s new Outlook email app on Smeal-owned computers, laptops, and mobile devices.
  • The RIIT Group will be available to assist you with questions about installing the Penn State Outlook email setup on your personal computers, laptops, and mobile devices.

The RIIT Group will push the Office 365 version of Office to your Smeal-owned office computers via BigFix. This will happen automatically for you and they will visit with each of you to help configure your new Penn State Office 365 Outlook desktop app. NOTE:  Please use the web version of Office 365 until someone from The RIIT Group has visited you (see instructions below in the “How to Access Penn State’s Office 365 Online Web Apps” section below).
