The SCMA held its first annual case competition on Friday 26, March.  Five teams comprised of 1st and 2nd year Smeal MBA students competed in the all day event.  It was a great opportunity for us to sharpen our public speaking and analytical skills in a non-threatening environment while having fun. My DC immersion

By Manisa, MBA Class of 2011

Since I could not go to Chile for global immersion, I decided to create my own “Washington, DC” immersion. I visited Smithsonian museums, Washington Monument, Capitol Hill, the National Archives, and also National Aquarium in Baltimore. It was great fun and I learned a lot about American history and cultures. I was able to see the original Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights as well. I asked the curator at the National Archives about “National Treasure 2” (the movie) and whether it is true to the real security they have there. He answered, “Yes, if there is a security issue, the documents will be pull into the wall. However, since 9/11, they have changed the security system and even the curators were not allowed to know what it is!!!” All in all, my spring break was nothing like I had planned but I did have fun and I learned one important lesson: always look on the bright side and roll with the punches!

APEX does have its benefits…

By Sara Paige, MBA Class of 2010

One of the projects my APEX team has been working on is market launch ideas for Polk Audio’s new speaker, the HitMaster.  Polk Audio, in sympathy to our pro bono work, offered to send us samples so that we could try it out.  A couple of weeks ago, I got the call that my new HitMaster was here. Although I don’t really have Guitar Hero or Rock Band (which the speaker is really for), I was pretty excited, because the audio at La Casa de Sara is pretty poor. Plus, after speaking with audiophiles over the last module, I was ready to upgrade a little. Continue reading

3 interviews in 3 days with 3 different styles

By Angela Xu, MBA Class of 2011

AMR Research ranked Penn State # 1 in Supply Chain Management. What is job hunting like for a first year MBA student looking for an internship? Apple, Amazon, Sears, Dell, VWR, PNC, Vanguard, Norvatis, E&Y, PWC, to name a few, all hire interns from Smeal MBA. I had the opportunity to interview with Johnson & Johnson, Apple and Sears, in three consecutive days. No wonder module three is the busiest one!! The courses for Supply Chain Management, Marketing and Finance all are in this module and we need to find an internship too!!! Continue reading

Chile’s Earthquake from the Inside: Rising from the rubble

After arriving in Santiago on Friday, February 26th at 9:30am, we decided to spend the day touring the Finance district. When the evening came, we set out to dine at a local Irish pub where we met two ex-pats who suggested a bar to go to for the night. A few of us decided to take this recommendation. Considering the two hour time difference, we were out later than expected. Close to 3:30am, the seventh largest earthquake to date struck. For those of us at the bar, we saw bottles and glasses come crashing to the floor all around us. We could see a mixture of terror and confusion on people’s faces. For those of us at the hotel, we were awoken by pieces of the ceiling falling to the floor after which we immediately evacuated. Continue reading

The Almost Chilean Immersion and Facebook!

By Rama Murugan, MBA Class of 2011

“RAMAAA! Wake up, there is something about an 8.8 richter scale earthquake in Chile on Facebook” shrieked Manisa at 7:16 AM on Saturday, the 27th of March, 2010. We were scheduled to leave for Chile at 2:30 in the afternoon from Newark, NJ. Well, notice the key words, “WERE supposed” in the previous sentence. Continue reading
