Wharton Case Competition

On the 20th of February 2015, a team from Smeal College of Business took part in the 15th annual Wharton MBA Buyout Case Competition. The competition was organized by Wharton’s Private Equity & Venture Capital Club. It was held at the Penn Club of New York. Smith M&A Competition 2013

The Penn State team at the Smith M&A Case Competition 2013 was made up of Iqbal Aasim, Masoud Ghayoumi from the 2nd year class and Stew Jamieson, Apurv Vachhani from the 1st year.

Personally speaking, the opportunity to showcase Penn State’s Finance prowess was the primary driving force in my decision to participate in this competition. In addition, it was a great learning opportunity and it also gave us the chance to network with students from other top schools and with industry experts who attended the event as judges. I entered into the program with the expectation that I would be working for a Fortune 50 firm or a bank upon graduation. Over the course of the first year, something changed. I took a class offered called the Garber Practicum, a venture capital class that invests real money in start-up organizations. But it wasn’t just the VC aspect of the class that I was interested in – it was the entrepreneurs’ side of the deal. Could I pitch an idea to a VC? Would it be good enough to get funded?
