“What is Kaltura Capture and how do I use it?”

A:

Kaltura Capture is a screen capture tool which allows users to create video content seamlessly and easily. You can use it to record video course announcements from anywhere, narrate over Powerpoint presentations for exam reviews, give students a video demonstration of an application or web-based resource, and much more. Created content is automatically uploaded to your Kaltura Media Space for easy editing and sharing, and can be accessed from directly within Canvas.To get started with Kaltura Capture, follow the steps below.

Step 1:

Go to https://psu.mediaspace.kaltura.com/, select (1) LOG IN HERE and then click (2) Login.

NOTE: You can also access Kaltura Capture within Canvas from the editing toolbar in Announcements, Pages, etc., or via the My Media menu item (if you have enabled it for your course in Settings).

Step 2:

Select (1) ADD NEW and then click (2) Kaltura Capture.

Step 3:

If prompted, install the Kaltura Desktop Recorder (it will launch automatically if installed)

NOTE: If you have issues installing the Kaltura Desktop Recorder please contact the RIIT Group for assistance)

Step 4:

To record on-screen content, click the (1) Display icon and select the (2) Source and (3) Area to record.

NOTE: The name(s) of your display(s) may differ from the example above)

Step 5:

To record your webcam, click the (1) Webcam icon and select the (2) Source to record.

NOTE: The name of your webcam may differ from the example above

Step 6:

To record audio, click the (1) Microphone icon and select the (2) Source to record.

NOTE: The name of your audio source may differ from the example above)

Step 7:

Click the (1) Start Recording button to begin recording.


During recording the Recording Menu will appear with the following options:

  1. Stop Recording – stops the recording
  2. Pause Recording – pauses (or resumes) the recording at any time
  3. Cancel Recording – cancels the recording
  4. Elapsed Time – shows the elapsed time of the recording
  5. Annotations – opens the Annotations options, which includes tools such as the Pencil Draw to draw freely on your screen, the Arrow to point out specific elements on your screen, or the Text Box which adds text anywhere on your screen

Step 8:

Click Stop Recording to finish recording.

NOTE: You will be taken to Kaltura Capture’s Entry page. Here you can enter a (1) Title for your recording, a (2) Description of the recording and any (3) Tags to help find the recording later. If you do not wish to save your recording, click (4) Delete. Click (5) Save and Upload to upload the recording to Kaltura MediaSpace. Click (6) Save to save the recording to your local library (the recording will not be uploaded to your MediaSpace).

Step 9:

Click Save and Upload from the Entry page.

NOTE: You will see several messages describing the status of your recording. The first will display when your recording has been saved successfully. The second will appear when the uploading of your recording to Kaltura Mediaspace has begun, and the last will appear when the recording has been successfully uploaded.

Step 10:

Select Click here on the final status message to review, edit, and manage your recording in Kaltura Mediaspace:
