Blog # 2: Social Profiling

Just this morning, I had been pulled over by a police officer for speeding. Note that I have never been pulled over before in my life. I’ve heard of a lot of people getting away with the first occurrence… but that didn’t happen to me. I was wearing a loose shirt, patterned leggings, and my hair was tied up in a ponytail… in other words, I was not dressed to impress. I wonder if, had I been wearing more business casual or business formal clothing, would the officer let me go with just a warning. I believe that both the way you look and the way you communicate can determine your ability of getting away with things. If I had been wearing jeans, a nice button down shirt, and had my hair in a much more professional manner, might have been able to leave that scene with just a warning instead of a fine of $170. The officer was nice enough to not give me any points or any sort of citations. The way you dress makes a statement. If I ever was going to an interview, I would dress in business formal clothing. The crisp corners of the clothing shows that you are serious and professional. A business formal outfit shows the employer or the rest of the world that you are responsible, that you don’t make mistakes. Now, looking back at the incident, I wish that I had been wearing more of a business casual outfit, I might have gotten away with just a warning.
