The Studio for Sustainability and Social Action seeks proposals from artists and creators from Penn State campuses who are interested in establishing or continuing a community-based art project that responds to one or more of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

We seek to provide mini-grants to artists to work with communities on projects related to sustainability and social action. Project Overview and Goals The School of Visual Arts Studio for Sustainability and Social Action (SoVAS3A) is dedicated to sustainability and a philosophical and moral call to social action through artistic practice.

SoVAS3A aims to reveal essential characteristics of what the arts do and to promote arts-based social action, environmental integrity, and economic equity. The purpose of this mini-grant program is to is to promote and coordinate community art projects and socially informed collaborations throughout Pennsylvania. We are interested in expanding collaborations between artists at University Park, Abington, and Altoona campuses.

ELIGIBLE ORGANIZATIONS

Any artist or collective associated with Penn State is eligible to apply. Artists are expected to commit to actively participating in the logistical processes inherent to a design project of this scope. Artists should demonstrate a record of artistic excellence, evidence of working in the field of public art for more than two years, and experience working in community settings.

PROJECT BUDGET AND CONTRACT INFORMATION

The Studio for Sustainability and Social Action will sponsor various artists for one academic year whose work in sustainability or social action reflects issues of diversity per the funding guidelines. The amount awarded for this project is will be between $2,000 and $6,000 as needed per the request of the applicant.

PROJECT TIMELINE

The timeline for completion of the project will be six months from the date the award was received, with the remaining six months of funding to be used towards maintenance of the project as well as promotion of the exhibition through community related events. If your project requires additional time to complete, please include this within your proposed timeline.

The proposal must include the following: – Artist statement of intent – Description of project (including concept and approach, and all logistics i.e. electric, networking, access, safety etc.) – How the proposed project aligns with SoVAS3A’s goals – Proposed schedule or timeline for design and fabrication – Anticipated budget, including a modified plan if budget expenses cannot be met – Schematic drawings, maps, or plans
