Nancy Campbell
Campbell will speak on Tuesday, November 10th, at noon about the challenges of making work about the climate crisis. Campbell will share stories about her time working in the Arctic and Greenland, about her experience in research residencies, and about her experience in producing visual art for communities. Campbell will give a poetry reading of her work and will share visual images from her letterpress book.
Nancy Campbell is a writer of poetry and non-fiction. A series of residencies with Arctic research institutions between 2010 and 2017 has resulted in many projects responding to the environment, most recently The Library of Ice: Readings in a Cold Climate, which was longlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize 2019. She is currently a Literature Fellow at Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia in Bamberg, Germany.
Nancy’s first poetry collection Disko Bay (‘a beautiful debut from a deft, dangerous and dazzling new poet writing from the furthest reaches of both history and climate change’–Carol Ann Duffy) was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection 2016 and the 2017 Michael Murphy Memorial Prize. In 2018/19 she was appointed the UK’s Canal Laureate by the Canal & River Trust and The Poetry Society.
Nancy began her career as an apprentice to master craftsmen in letterpress studios in British Columbia and Brooklyn, and she has written, designed and published a number of limited edition books including How To Say ‘I Love You’ In Greenlandic: An Arctic Alphabetwhich received the Birgit Skiöld Award.
Nancy is dedicated to developing innovative projects to engage audiences with environmental issues. She was a MarieClaire ‘Wonder Woman’ in 2016 for activities including Arctic Book Club and The Polar Tombola, an interactive live literature event. Her work has been supported by Arts Council England, The Worshipful Company of Stationers, and the Oppenheim-John Downes Memorial Trust.
Nancy’s writing appears regularly in the Times Literary Supplement and many other journals. Bill Jacklin: Graphics, co-authored with Jill Lloyd, was published in 2016 to accompany the artist’s exhibition at the Royal Academy. For some years the editor of international art magazine Printmaking Today, she remains on its editorial board. She has also co-edited issues of Oxford Poetry and Dark Mountain.
