The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and has a total budget of over $30 billion. Its mission is broad: “To seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce the burdens of illness and disability.”
NIH includes 27 institutes and centers, including the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD).
