We are pleased to announce a special graduate course offering, Assistive Technology for Learners with Autism, in Spring 2018.

The 3-credit class will be an online offering, and will focus on how education professionals and family members can use assistive technology to support learners with autism in learning communication, literacy, and community participation skills.

To be specific, the students in this graduate level class will learn how to

  • Help children who have difficulty with speech
    • communicate using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) displays;
  • Help children with behavior challenges
    • learn social skills using visual schedules;
  • Help children who experience difficulty following verbal instructions
    • learn new skills using self-modeling videos;
  • Help children with reading disabilities
    • use digital texts for both academic and pleasure reading

The on-line class will be taught by Dr David McNaughton, and feature a mixture of on-line materials and interactive activities. Class participants also will have an opportunity to develop and use individualized assistive technology materials that are relevant to the learners with whom they work. The class will emphasize how  commonly available computer technology can be used to provide important assistance to learners with autism.

Please send any questions about this class to Dr David McNaughton at dbm2@psu.edu

Students interested in the class should email Dr Katie Hoffman (keh228@psu.edu) to register for the class.
