Description: Writing and research skills are sometimes dismissed as “soft skills” when, in fact, they are the foundation of critical thinking, communication, and lifelong learning. Yet our current landscape presents multiple challenges to the effective teaching of writing and research skills. How do we meet the expectations that first-year writers will be well-equipped for the demands of writing across the content areas upon successful completion of ENGL 15? How do we meet the needs of students requiring remediation while also enriching the learning of students who have more developed writing and research skills? How do we help mentor students through the research process? Given the proliferation of conspiracy theories and “alternative facts,” how do we navigate tough conversations with students about why certain ideas, no matter how popular, are not actually defensible? Join us to explore a range of ideas regarding how we teach writing and research.
