The Maryland Zoo sits inside Druid Hill Park, a historic green space of Baltimore comparable to Central Park in both its size and history. Currently, the pedestrian experience coming from the nearby metro stop to reach the zoo is under-maintenanced, inaccessible, and neither engaging nor memorable. There’s an opportunity to more closely weave the zoo to the park by creating a transition of native Maryland habitat as the pedestrian enters the park and walks towards the zoo. By implementing this, the zoo visitor gains a new perspective on nature in their own backyards, and the pedestrian understanding of place is improved.
