Chemiluminescence Experiment:
Tracy Lea-Dorsey, Penn State Brandywine
Ever wonder why a lightning bug lights, how forensic scientist solve crimes, or what is really in that glow stick at the dollar store. It is called Chemiluminescence. A fancy scientific name that explains how light is made from a chemical reaction. The kit we will use will have everything we need, just make sure you wear your safety glasses and a pair of gloves. Let us make our very own chemiluminescence solution and see what cool things we can do with it!
Participating students will receive necessary supplies.
It’s Another World! Seeing the Invisible Through your Own Microscope:
Dr. Mark Boudreau, Penn State Brandywine
Students will learn to use a digital microscope to view the microcosmos of biology available in your house, outside your door, and on your very own body. After figuring out how to focus and pan across a prepared slide in the kit, students will go collect what they are curious about, be it a leaf or an insect, food or fabric, or a drop of water, and learn to mount it on a slide and observe. We will share what we have found using the cell phone feature, then try to understand what we’re seeing. Finally, everyone will sample and see their own hair, skin, or cheeks like they’ve never seen them before!
Participating students will receive necessary supplies.
Digital Construction:
Engineering and construction professions are merging into a digital construction ecosystem. This workshop will introduce the concept of Digital Construction. Today, engineering and construction projects benefit from modern digital methods. Students will learn how to design, plan, and deliver a construction project digitally through an interactive exercise using LEGO building blocks.
Participating students will receive necessary supplies.
Coding with Bolt:
Dr. Martin Yeh, Nannette D’Imperio, Penn State Brandywine
Computer Science is for everyone! If you are interested in building the confidence to creatively solve complex problems, join us for a hands-on robotics and coding workshop and begin to learn how to future-proof your career. Participating students attend both Parts 1 and 2.
Programmable BOLT robot balls will be donated to the schools of participating students (max 10/school) to be used during the workshop.
The Wonders of Chemistry and the Careers to Explore Them:
Tracy Lea-Dorsey, Penn State Brandywine:

Connecting the Dots – From People to Planet, Race to Place, COVID to Climate:
Lisa Ferretto, Director of Sustainability, Hord, Coplan, and Macht
Equity, environment, and economy. People, planet, and prosperity. Racial, environmental, and social justice. We have all heard about this three-legged stool of Sustainability and never has it been more apparent –that all three legs are falling down. All three are undergoing a current crisis. All three pose a massive threat that disproportionately affects populations unjustly. We need to connect the dots from people to planet, from race to place, from COVID to climate. We cannot try to solve one crisis to inform the other but need to address and respond to these threats simultaneously with a road to recovery, prevention, and resilience. How are the architecture, design, and sustainable professions in Baltimore and across the country addressing these complex challenges?
Saving the Seas through Social Media:
Teresa Mackey, The Ocean Foundation
Ocean policy and communications specialist Teresa Mackey will discuss science communication – why it is important for those interested in pursuing a STEAM career and the best ways to publicize research and influence policy.
On the Jobsite with Civil Engineers:
Will Stann, Forrester Construction
We live in a world surrounded by the solutions designed by civil engineers and installed by construction professionals. We can see civil engineering in our roads and in our buildings. This learning session will provide some examples of civil engineering design and construction in real life applications at an active construction project site. We will show examples of how earthwork, site civil and structural design elements are incorporated into the things we use every day.
Engineering is Everywhere:
Dr. Maria Evans, Penn State Brandywine
Is there a problem that you hope to solve? Engineers are problem-solvers. Come explore the career options and engineering degrees available to you. See yourself making the world a better place through engineering.
Math & Crafts:
Dr. Samantha Pezzimenti, Penn State Brandywine
Creativity and math go hand-in-hand. In this workshop, we’ll learn about some artistic endeavors that mathematics allows you to pursue. We’ll also demonstrate a mathematical craft you can try at home – if you want to try it out during the session, have a pair of scissors, a piece of paper, and some tape ready.
Biology in Action:
Dr. Mark Boudreau, Penn State Brandywine
There are a lot of challenges facing the world right now, but these are also opportunities for young people to do jobs finding solutions. Let’s talk about three big problems we see everyday, COVID-19, the spotted lanternfly, and climate change, and others you may think of, and all the different kinds of work in biology that will help solve them.
Exploring and Developing Skills for High-Tech Careers:
