Workshop Co-Chairs
Jungwoo Ryoo, Ph.D., CISSP, CISA
Professor of Information Sciences and Technology
Penn State Altoona
Dr. Jungwoo Ryoo is a professor of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at Penn State Altoona. His research interests include the use of virtual worlds in cyber security education. He leads the NSF PI Forum on Virtual Environments and Game-Based Learning (GBL) in the Classroom. His NSF-funded project entitled “Immersive Security Education Environment (I-SEE)” explored teaching and learning cyber security concepts in 3D virtual environments such as Second Life and Open Simulator. The findings from this research are available in the article Security Education Using Second Life published in IEEE Security and Privacy. Dr. Ryoo is also the PI of an ongoing NSF project whose goal is to build a big data analytics workforce in iSchools.
David Fusco, Ph.D.
Lecturer of Information Sciences and Technology
College of Information Sciences and Technology, Penn State
Dr. Dave Fusco has been an executive technology leader in higher education for the majority of his professional career. Dave has worked at Saint Francis University, Juniata College, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and now works at Penn State University in the College of IST (Information Sciences and Technology). Dave teaches students face-to-face, blended, and online at the main campus and through the World Campus. Dave teaches undergraduates courses in enterprise systems integration, complex enterprise storage design, and in the MPS (Master of Professional Studies) in EA (Enterprise Architecture), a fully online program focused on creating the next generation of strategic technology professionals. In addition, Dr. Fusco is an affiliate member of the Center for Enterprise Architecture at Penn State, a member of a newly formed committee ‘Next Gen Higher Ed Task Force’, and was awarded a grant to fund my own research project to evaluate the relationship between XaaS/Cloud-based infrastructure alignment and EA frameworks. Dave also spends a great deal of time doing community outreach, youth mentorship, and volunteering on several governing boards.
Dave’s undergraduate degree, a B.S. in Computer Science and Math, was obtained from Penn State University in 1990. Dave went on to earn his M.Ed. in Education/Leadership from Saint Francis University in 2000. In 2012, Dave received his Doctorate from Drexel University in Educational Leadership and Management.
Dave was recently selected to receive the 2015 Drexel University School of Education Outstanding Educator of the Year Award.
Kurt Winkelmann, Ph.D.
Associate Professor in Chemistry
Chemistry Department, Florida Tech.
Dr. Kurt Winkelmann is an associate professor in the Chemistry Department at Florida Tech. His research interests include the use of virtual worlds in the chemistry teaching lab and curriculum design for chemistry and nanotechnology laboratory courses. Most recently, he led an NSF-funded study to compare general chemistry lab experiments performed in Second Life and in a real laboratory setting. Students found the Second Life experiments to be enjoyable and they earned grades equal to or better than their peers performing analogous experiments in the real world. Overall, the Second Life experiments had a more positive effect on women than men, leading to them have a more favorable view of the chemistry laboratory experience overall. Read about the project’s preliminary results here and view a short video featuring Dr. Wendy Keeney-Kennicutt, project coPI.
