Student Organizations at Penn State

If you are interested in any of the following organizations, more information about them and contact info can be found at http://www.engr.psu.edu/students/organizations.aspx

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE):

SHPE changes lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support, and development.  SHPE’s vision is a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. Through leadership, professional development, chapter development, and community outreach SHPE hopes to improve your professional skills and have a greater impact on our community.

Society of Women Engineers (SWE):

The Society of Women Engineers, SWE, is a national organization composed of both student and professional members.  This society was founded nationally in 1950 to act as a supportive organization for women in the engineering field. SWE’s mission statement is to “stimulate women to achieve as engineers and leaders, expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and demonstrate the value of diversity.”  The Penn State Student Section was founded in 1975 and has grown to become the largest and most active engineering organization on campus, with over 250 members.

National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE):

The mission of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Penn State Chapter, is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.  NSBE’s 26,000+ members are divided up into more than 270 chapters on college and university campuses, 75 Alumni Extension chapters nationwide, and 75 Pre-College chapters. These chapters are also further geographically divided into six regions. NSBE had its genesis at a national conference planned and hosted by the Society of Black Engineers at Purdue University in April 1975.

American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES):

AISES’ mission is to increase substantially the representation of American Indian and Alaskan Natives in engineering, science, and other related technology disciplines. Through a variety of educational programs, AISES offers financial, academic, and cultural support to American Indians and Alaska Natives from middle school through graduate school. AISES provides professional development activities to enable teachers to work effectively with Native students. AISES also develops culturally appropriate curricula and publications. AISES builds partnerships with tribes, schools, other non-profit organizations, corporations, foundations, and government agencies to realize its goals.  AISES especially helps American Indian and Alaska Native students prepare for careers in science, technology, and engineering.

Association of Women in Computing (AWC):

To attract and retain more women in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering majors by providing an open, safe environment of female peers and a place where women can freely ask questions and learn more about their field. We promote the advancement of women in the technical fields and provide networking opportunities for all of our members.
