Rhetorical Analysis Essay

Draft Ideas

I am still very unsure about the second artifact I am currently using and so I am searching for a possible replacement. However, for the time being, I will simply use this as a way to brainstorm about my second artifact and see how well it fits in comparison with my first.

The thing about my artifact is I am not completely sure who created it as it was originally posted on Twitter. However, the purpose of the artifact is to demonstrate the relevance of prisons and the misplaced emphasis on them. The artifact serves to show that prisons, in effect, are 22 times more prioritized than education in California. A theme to this argument might be the idea that education creates a better society, not necessarily prisons.

This ideological belief and message was made for the purpose of encouraging the government to spend money on education while simultaneously decreasing recidivism rates. This, in effect, is a piece of advocacy regarding governmental action.

I think the demonstration and side-by-side comparison is what drew me to this artifact. It was clear and the message was something that was easy to understand and get behind. I think it is appropriate for in-depth analysis because of its artistic portrayal, specificity, and bluntness.

As far as how this compares to my civic artifact, I am not sure to what extent it will be effective. My civic artifact is The Marshall Project. While the Marshall Project emphasizes understanding and informing on the justice system, the second artifact focuses on the unnatural number of prisons and the opportunity cost it has when the government spends money on it. However, The Marshall Project has a focus on racism and the role of race in the justice system. While they both advocate for knowledge about the justice system, they focus on completely different aspects. That being said, I am not sure if this would be the best comparison to use.
