Thank you for your interest in our study. We have received numerous sign ups and we are currently prioritizing sampling in our target study areas. As a result, we may not be able to sample everyone who has signed up. However, we are exploring other ways to do more sampling. We encourage you to sign up but kindly ask for your patience and understanding as we determine our study logistics. Please email Dr. Baka (jeb525@psu.edu) if you have additional questions.

Project Overview

The Penn State Earth and Environmental Sciences Institute is conducting a study to better understand the relationship between proximity to unconventional energy development and groundwater quality in Southwestern PA. The objectives of this study are to:

    1. Study groundwater samples from private wells or springs at homes in close proximity to energy development sites, and
    2. Conduct a household survey about land use, well use, and demographics with residents where groundwater samples are collected.

Participation

If you get your water from a private drinking well, you may qualify for this study. Your involvement would consist primarily of having the research team visit your home to:

    1. Collect a water sample from your private well, and
    2. Answering survey questions regarding the characteristics of your well and well water, land use practices at your residence (e.g. farming), and demographic characteristics about residence of your home (e.g. age, occupation, time living at the residence).

We will share the review and study findings with you.
