About Germanic
The Germanic family was first documented in the Roman Era during a period of intense migrations. From approximately 200AD – 1000 AD, various migrations placed Germanic speakers in Western and Central Europe (forms of German), Britain (English), Scandinavia, Iceland and elsewhere.
Surviving Germanic languages are today classified as Western Germanic (includes German, Dutch, English) and North Germanic (the Scandinavian Germanic languages). The ancestor of the Scandinavian Germanic languages was Old Norse.
