WIP: Moderating Philosophy

Posted by on Feb 14, 2013 in Work In Progress | 0 comments

Like most of my classmates, I have no idea how exactly I would like to moderate or what kind of moderator I want ti be. However, seeing the various teaching philosophies assured me that everyone has their own style when it comes to these types of things. Each teaching philosophy was clear and explained the duties and goals of each teacher clearly. I would like to do the exact same thing in my moderator’s philosophy. I especially liked Professor Willitz philosophy. He explained that there is no secret formula to teaching but rather one’s success in the field depended on the effort you put into the job and your interaction with students.  I think that in order to be a good moderator it  will ultimately depend on my people skills. Also, I have to be sure to outline not only my strengths and weaknesses but also what I liked most about moderating.  I think that the things that make a strong philosophy is one that answers all of the framing questions clearly and also has the personal element imbedded in it.

I’ve been thinking of some things that I can put into my moderator’s philosophy:

  • Why I am moderating
  • What makes me want to do it
  • My strengths and weaknesses
  • How this experience will help me in the future
  • What I have learned from being a moderator

CI Reflections

I really like the addition of Civic Issues posts for this semester. They provide an opportunity for thoughtful conversation that is backed up with a mix of facts and statistics. My CI blog focuses on education and for my first post I focused on the issue of diversity at Penn State. When I prepare a CI post I definitely do a lot more research because the post is longer and more in depth and also because I want people to read it and have something to say afterwards. That process is definitely what sets CI posts apart from say, a Passion post. I wish that for my first CI post that I didn’t jump around so much and had focused on one concrete issue because looking back that made the blog a little confusing.

Looking at other people’s posts I can definitely say the mix of facts and personal experiences is what draws me into the post. Also, I think it’s important that people take a stance on whatever issue they are writing about. It makes for healthy debate and a good conversation. I don’t think people should be afraid to step on some toes if it’s about something they truly have an opinion on. From the comments on my post I saw what other people thought about the diversity at Penn State and saw how other people view the same topic but in different ways.

I think that for my future posts I want to keep the main topic concise and clear and just go more in depth with my ideas and analysis. I’ve seen this done in other posts and I would like to do that also. For my remaining posts I will continue with the topic of education because I can never get tired of that and I will try and accomplish the goals that I mentioned above.

Group Presentation- Chapter 8

Posted by on Jan 31, 2013 in Work In Progress | 0 comments

The chapter that my group and I will present is Chapter 8- Deliberative Communities and Societies

The chapter analyzes the way deliberation works in various communities and settings. In addition to that analysis, the chapter also explains how to successfully bring deliberation into a community.

Here are some of the main points that I feel should be focused on in our presentation:

  • The connections between public officials, citizens , local media, and private associations when it comes to a deliberation
  • Democracy and Deliberation
  • How deliberations of the past can influence the modern methods of today
  • The various theories in the chapter, like the Structuration Theory
  • How exactly one creates a deliberative society (The example used in the book is in a school setting)

When we present we could use maybe a Prezzy. I’ve never used one before so it might be interesting to make a creative powerpoint with a topic that isn’t so exciting. Anything will work really because this is such a short presentation.

This I Believe… Respect

Natalia TIB

I believe in respect for women. Respect is a value that should never be compromised. I have lost count of the times I have seen crimes perpetuated against the women I call my fellow sisters. Physical and verbal abuse. Sexism. Rape. The offenders of these crimes lack the fundamental lesson instilled in me at such an early age: That women are brave and strong and to be respected at all times. Some of us in this generation seem to have forgotten that we ALL come from a woman and that fact in and of itself demands a certain level of appreciation.  Growing up in a single parent household has fueled my belief even more as I have watched my mother work endlessly to provide a better life for my siblings and I. At times it was obvious that my mom was at her breaking point with stress, and bills and just the day to day of living but she kept on working.

My parents have been divorced since I was about 9. Everything changed; from my mom having to get a second job to her moving an hour away from her family and friends and putting my siblings and I in a new school. I used to think my mom was superwoman when I was younger. She would come home from work, get me ready for school, and probably gossip on the phone as she did it. Everything seemed fine. It wasn’t until I got older that I noticed the tiredness behind my mother’s eyes; The way her arthritis limited her movement and took her strength. I would joke that she should go out for a weekend with her girls and her answer would always be the same, “Natalia, you know I have to work”, she would say with a sigh. Now as I become an adult I see the sacrifices that my mom has made in order to better the lives of her children.

My mother’s story is nothing new; it’s one repeated endlessly in homes across America. Everyday a woman drags her tired body out of bed, puts on a strong face and selflessly does what she has to do to make sure her children have a better life than the parents that came before them.  This is why I believe in respect for women. I respect all of the strong women in this world putting what they have to do way before the things they want to do. To this day,  I will never forget my mother’s famous words, “Behavior is learned”. It’s a phrase I’ve heard repeated throughout most of my life. My mom likes to say that people’s values don’t just come from anywhere, that they are instilled in them at a young age by their parents. Therefore it is no surprise that I believe in respect for women because I had as strong, beautiful to give me the foundation for that value.

My TIB Rough Draft (verrry rough)

I believe that no matter what respect for others, namely women, is a value that should never be compromised. As a woman it pains me to see the instances of crimes against my fellow sisters. This generation has seemed to have forgotten that we ALL come from a woman and that fact in and of itself demands a certain level of respect. I believe that the importance of the female has been forgotten. Domestic and verbal abuse. Sexism. Rape. I believe that the perpetrators of these crimes lack the fundamental lesson instilled in me and my siblings as children: That a woman is to be treasured and respected. It has always been my thinking that seeing my mother work so hard as a single mom fueled my respect for her.

Since I was around 9 years old I have seen my mother work twelve hour shifts on little or no sleep in order to provide for me and my two siblings. Even though she would come home run down and tired she still somehow mustered up the strength to get us to school and get everything in order in the house before she left for work that night. What I came to realize as I grew older was that the choices that my mom made were all because of her love for her children. It was the strength that fueled her and for that I thank her.

On the issue of respect I will never forget my mother’s famous words, “Behavior is learned”. It’s a phrase I’ve heard repeated throughout most of my life. My mom likes to say that people’s values don’t just come from anywhere that they are instilled in them at a young age by their parents. Therefore it is no surprise that I believe in respect for women because I had my own mother to give me the foundation for that value. This value has undoubtedly translated into my adult life and is the reason why I feel the need to speak out when I see something that disturbs me.

Reflection of Myself

Posted by on Dec 5, 2012 in Work In Progress | 0 comments

As my first semester of college comes to a close I have realized that I have accomplished so many “firsts” and have grown closer into becoming an independent individual. RCL class in particular has presented me with many challenges concerning what I want to do with my life, how I approach the unknown, and how I should set goals for the future. As a writer I have worked to go more in depth when it comes to our various assignments. This is something that I have previously struggled with and will continue to work on in the next semester of this class. One thing I’m really proud of in my first year is how I branched out and made friends and did things that I didn’t normally do. Before I came to college I didn’t really party and I was definitely more quiet. Now I do all these things and if it weren’t for me having a new attitude I wouldn’t have met people this year that I know will be in my life forever. In the next semester I would like to earn an A in RCL, work to the best of my ability concerning speeches and papers and also get over my anxiety about public speaking. I would also like to get more involved with clubs and what not so I can get even more connected to my school.
