Nittany Lions shut out Hoosiers, 24-0

The Penn State Nittany Lions football team once again emerges victorious in a one-sided affair with the Indiana Hoosiers Saturday.

Penn State cruised to a 24-0 victory in Happy Valley, and Indiana was kept off the scoreboard completely for the first time since 2000. The team was clearly firing on all cylinders against Indiana, and they have the necessary confidence to defeat giants like the Iowa Hawkeyes next week. Although Sean Clifford’s passing rate – 17 of 33 passes being caught and one interception – was not as spectacular as in previous weeks, he did throw completions for 178 yards, including all three of the Nittany Lions’ touchdowns that evening. Keyvone Lee led the Lions’ rushing corps, averaging over nine yards per carry in eight attempts, and Jahan Dotson once again showed his receiving prowess with two of the three touchdowns scored that evening; the other was hauled in by tight end Brenton Strange in his sole 10-yard reception. Arnold Ebiketie and Brandon Smith each recorded a sack for the defense, and Joey Porter, Jr. and Ji’Ayir Brown each caught interceptions.

The Indiana quarterbacks had a rough night. Michael Penix, Jr., completed only 10 of 22 passes, including an interception, before he was benched in favor of Jack Tuttle. Tuttle, who only attempted 12 passes, was on track to perform better in yards gained, but similarly struggled to complete his throws, with only six being caught and one being intercepted. The main offensive highlights for the Hoosiers were 34-yard completions to Peyton Hendershot and Miles Marshall. Hendershot led the Indiana offense with 88 yards on the day. Raheem Layne had himself a decent night on defense, catching Clifford’s only interception of the evening.

Despite the handy victory, Penn State was unable to climb from number four in the Associated Press NCAA poll rankings. The Iowa Hawkeyes, who meet the Nittany Lions in Iowa this Saturday, finished with an even further lopsided affair in a 51-14 win over the Maryland Terrapins last weekend and jumped to number three, while the Lions stayed put. They should not be discouraged from this in the slightest, and should use it as fuel to be at their absolute best for their trip to Iowa, where they will face their most challenging opponent thus far on the season.
