Behrend Softball Shuts Down Marietta in Non-Section Doubleheader

Marietta, OH – The Penn State Behrend Softball team shut out Marietta during a non-section doubleheader on Sunday, March 24. Behrend defeated Marietta 7-2 in the first game, and then had a 6-0 dominant performance during the second game. These two wins improved Behrend’s overall record to 9-7.

Game One

Four players completed a pair of hits for the Lions to accomplish their victory. Abby Tingley, of Union City, PA, contributed to their success by making two runs, making way for her fourth win of the season. Maria Jones, of Wilcox, PA, and Britney Shaw, of St. Marys, PA, each ripped a double, and Kayla Salvini, of McDonald, PA, helped the team with a pair of RBIs.

Behrend was briefly behind after the first inning after Marietta got on the board first, but then answered by scoring six home runs to take the lead for the remainder of the game. Shaw had a double, and Jones came right behind Shaw with a single to put the runners on the corners.

Lexi Edgett, of Frisco, TX, drove in Shaw, and then Meghan Petitte, of Sugarcreek, OH, drove in Jones with a single to the shortstop to achieve a 2-1 lead in the game. Behrend tallied four more runs in the top of the fourth inning, and this occurred with just four hits to extend the lead to 6-1.

Jocelyn McNany, of Cranberry Township, PA, Edgett and Salvini added two hits, and Meghan Petitte, of Sugarcreek, OH, accomplished two hits each.

Game Two

Kayla Lindberg, of Augstinburg, PH, was able to throw a six-hit shutout, and this was done while she fanned six for her fourth win. M. Jones continued her remarkable accomplishments with three more hits in the second game, which included a double and a triple, while she drove in two runs, and scored a run as well.

Petitte and Athena Iverson, of Pittsburgh, PA added two hits each, and Behrend made three runs in the second inning. In addition, Behrend scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, leading to the final moments of the contest. 

Jones accomplished a double in the first inning of the game, and then followed by ripping a triple, scoring the final two runs in the top of the third frame. The performance of the defense did not go unnoticed, as Lindberg was able to keep Marietta from scoring at all, and the offense was able to score an additional three home runs in the seventh inning.

Jones was able to start the frame, performing a single, followed by a score on Petitte’s single, resulting in a 4-0. In addition, Petitte and Julia Jones, of Wilcox, PA, were able to score on the at-bat for Salvini.
