Fredonia, NY – The Penn State Behrend Baseball team beat Fredonia 6-2 this past Tuesday, April 16, to take home the Interstate 90 (I-90) Cup. This contest improved Behrend’s overall record to 18-8, and their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) record to 5-3. Behrend is in second place in the AMCC standings following this game.
The I-90 cup has become a long tradition, and is named in honor of the fact that both teams need to travel about 40 minutes on I-90 to play each other. Fredonia has not played Penn State Behrend since 2021, where Fredonia defeated Behrend 13-4.
Fredonia got on the board first with the first run of the game, as they were able to pull off an RBI single during the top of the first inning. However, Behrend quickly bounced back and was able to lead Fredonia 2-1 during the second inning, as Spencer Deitz, of Erie, Pennsylvania, made an RBI single, and a mishap by Fredonia’s pitcher. Anthony Slate, of Hopewell, Pennsylvania, sac flew during the top of the third inning, which consequently added a run to the board. Fredonia was able to come back with one RBI groundout during the fourth inning of the game.
Shortly after this, Slate accomplished his second run of the game, as he made another sac fly, which brought the score to 4-2 after the fifth inning. During the top of the seventh inning, Daniel Boehme, of Peters Township, Pennsylvania, contributed an RBI single of his own. Freshman Dylan Barnes, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, contributed the final point of the game for Lions, and made his first home run of his NCAA career during the ninth inning.
Starter Alec Greenblatt, of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, got into gear at the conclusion of the first inning, where he only gave up one run on three hits, with three strikeouts and three innings that he pitched.
Evan Bromley was able to help the Lions come up on top over Fredonia, where he accomplished his first win of the year in relief. “Senior Evan Bromley (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) earned his first win of the year in relief, allowing one run on two hits to go along with two strikeouts” Penn State Behrend Athletics said in a statement on their website following the game.
Nathan Campbell, of Wexford, Pennsylvania, and Sawyer Prince, of Shinglehouse, Pennsylvania, each threw an inning out of the bullpen with no score whatsoever. Boehme was able to finish with a game-high four hits off the bat, and slate logged two RBIs.
Behrend Baseball will return to action on Thursday April 18, at Alfred State University, in an AMCC doubleheader. Game times are set for 1 and 4 p.m.
