The thrill of attending a concert usually is to see your favorite music artist in the flesh, right? To be able to say, “Hey, I know what my favorite singer looks like in real life! I can see how their facial expressions change with emotion when they perform.”
When Sia performs, she covers half of her face with a half-black, half-platinum wig; however, that does not take away the magic of attending one of her concerts. If anything, it adds a uniqueness to her performances.
While Sia remains in the left back corner of the stage, with the exception of the opening song “Alive,” various dancers perform contemporary dances that express the emotions experienced in the songs.
Maddie Ziegler, former star of “Dance Moms,” was the main star throughout the show, as she had been featured in Sia’s past videos such as “Chandelier,” “Elastic Heart,” “Cheap Thrills” and, most recently, “The Greatest.”
Sia opened with “Alive,” at the center of the stage, wearing what seemed like a huge white fluffy skirt. As the song began, the skirt began swaying to the beat of the song, revealing that the skirt was actually a group of people wearing white fluffy costumes.
As the second verse began, the “skirt” pulled away, uncovering Ziegler. She then began dancing frantically, conveying the song’s feelings of resilience. Her dancing style definitely portrays that “victim to victory” theme shown in many of Sia’s songs.
The show mostly featured songs from her latest album, “This Is Acting,” such as “Unstoppable,” “Reaper,” “Cheap Thrills” and “Move Your Body.”
Surprising fans, Sia also sang “Breath Me” and “Soon We’ll Be found,” which are some of her older songs that came out in the mid to late 2000s, when she used to perform with her face uncovered. While singing “Soon We’ll Be found,” Sia also used sign-language along with the lyrics. This was an interesting touch, and it somehow added a sense of comfort to the song.
Sia then continued with “Chandelier,” with Ziegler dancing and jumping around with a set-up similar to the music video. This was exciting to watch because “Chandelier” was the song that launched both Sia and Ziegler into fame and what brought them together to collaborate.
The showed concluded with “The Greatest.” This song was written as a tribute to the victims of the Orlando shooting at the Pulse club. Sia changed into rainbow-colored attire. The background of the stage was lighted with rainbow as well. This was an emotional performance, as the dancers ran and struggled across the stage, and performed a choreograph similar to the music video.
Sia covers her face because she battled with depression and drug addiction in the past. She feels that fame played a great part in this. This, however; does not affect her reputation as a performer. Her talent and powerful voice make up for not being able to see her face, as she uses her voice to convey emotion.
Sia’s talent is one-of-a-kind as she writes her own lyrics, lyrics that inspire people around the world to overcome their struggles and embrace the love and wonders of life.
