On March 24, Penn State Abington students Trinity Golden, Giovanni Bradley and Sam Santiago, advised by Dr. Liliana Naydan, attended the Mid Atlantic Writing Center Association (MAWCA) conference held at Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J.
“As a writing and English tutor, I wanted to share more about my own experiences at the Learning Center as well as the true value of this type of work,” said Trinity Golden, a sophomore at Penn State Abington.
These three students attended the MAWCA conference to listen and share their experiences as writing tutors here at Penn State Abington.
“It’s important for students to attend conferences like MAWCA because conference attendance helps them to develop academically in a specific area. More importantly, though, conference attendance shows students that they’re already part of a profession,” said Dr. Naydan, the writing program coordinator at Penn State Abington.
The MAWCA convention is very important for students who have an interest in a writing profession. It gives them a true feel for working in the field because the attendees are other writing professionals. If the students who attend enjoy the convention, they are most likely more inspired to continue in that field.
“While at the convention, we discussed ways to change and improve the writing centers and writing tutor programs at our universities. The convention was full of people who were truly excited to listen to our experiences and share theirs,” said Giovanni Bradley, a senior at Penn State Abington.
This convention ultimately inspires activism among the attendees and motivates them to make improvements to their own learning centers as well as writing programs. Students interested in attending MAWCA next year must be a writing tutor or a writing fellow.
