Welcome Back!

Hello all! Welcome back to this semester’s continuation of “The Premier Page,” or “The Premier Post.” For those of you who are new, this post offers a biweekly breakdown of the current events in England’s Premier League, the most prestigious soccer league in the world. If you are a fan of soccer in the United States, the Premier League is essentially the English version of the MLS. A lot has happened over the past several weeks, so without further delay, let’s begin!

Ollie Watkins

Of the many fluctuations in the Premier League table since early November 2023, Aston Villa’s triumphant charge to the top of the table has been the biggest story. Although they are currently second to Liverpool (3 points behind), Villa has shown that they are fully capable of winning the Premier League. Their conquest to the pinnacle of the league began on December 6th when they took down the defending European Champions, Manchester City, 1-0 in a thrilling smackdown. On December 9th, after just 3 days of rest, Villa managed to stifle Arsenal 1-0 in a match of equivalent entertainment. After defeating the two favorites for the Premier League title this season in marvelous fashion, Villa has been considered a major contender for the crown themselves. Becoming English champions is difficult for any team, but Villa’s success will be dependent on the health and performance of star player Ollie Watkins. Watkins is currently tied for first in assists and tied for seventh in goals this season. Although Villa has depth, losing Watkins to injury could spell issues for their offense.

Similar to Aston Villa, Liverpool FC have also climbed the rankings since November, establishing themselves at the top of the table. Up until Thanksgiving, Liverpool had been hovering around the fourth and fifth position in the rankings. During that time, Liverpool had been successful in avoiding losses, however, they were failing to win games, often settling for draws. This was detrimental to their ranking, since draws only grant teams 1 point, while wins award 3. Since then, Liverpool’s left-footed superstar, Mohammad Salah, has come to life, sparking immense offensive threat, leading to more wins and more points. Tied for first in both goals and assists in the Premier League, like Watkins for Villa, Salah will play a major role in Liverpool’s road to glory this season. Having only lost once (to the Tottenham Hotspurs on September 30, 2023), Liverpool are the team to beat moving into the second half of the season.

To wrap-up the overview of the past several weeks, we will move to the bottom of the table and look at the teams who are on relegation watch. The three teams who qualify for relegation right now are Sheffield United, Burnley, and Luton Town. Of these three, Sheffield remains the biggest loser, and the most likely to be relegated this season. They have lost an astonishing 15/20 games and, of the non-losses, have only won 2. Scratching out points in only one of every four matches is a path straight to relegation, which is exactly where Sheffield are.

If you have made it this far, thank you very much, and I will see you next time!

  1. Very cool post buddy Will! These are exciting times in the Premier League! Aston Villa’s surge, led by Ollie Watkins, sets the stage for a thrilling title race. Liverpool’s comeback, thanks to Mohamed Salah, puts them at the top. Sheffield United faces relegation woes with a challenging record. Your breakdown captures the league’s dynamics effectively. Can’t wait for the next update—football drama at its finest!

  2. I am a big sports fan, but have never really gotten into soccer or the Premier League. I hope to gain some knowledge on the league throughout the semester. I am part of PSSN here which does weekly sports broadcasting segments. One of the segments they did two weeks ago was on the Premier League following the end of its break. I remember hearing Sheffield United and how this has been a rough season for them, potentially pushing them to relegation.
