After a 17 month long pregnancy, captive Orca in SeaWorld gave birth to a calf; the sex is still undetermined. This is something that SeaWorld makes out to be a new and exciting event in order to gain approval of their fans. Unfortunately, this is just another helpless orca born into captivity who will never experience life in the wild.
The first step to eliminating Orcas in captivity would be no longer allowing the whales to reproduce, more specifically, stop forcefully inseminating female Orcas. If they stopped doing this, the number of Orcas would eventually go down. Since freeing the Orcas would cause distress to them, that may not be the correct answer. But, if they stop the reproduction, no more whales will be born into captivity, and the whales that are in captivity can live out their lives in SeaWorld.
This way, there is no additional stress added onto the already stressed and emotional Orcas, such as transportation, pregnancy, etc. Stopping the population growth of captive Orcas would be a great way to end SeaWorld’s idea that orcas belong in captivity.
It is a long shot, as SeaWorld continues to refuse to admit that what they do is wrong and unethical, but the idea of eliminating forced reproduction is just some food for thought.
