Weekly News Media Monitoring Week 10: Celebrity Halloween Trends 2023!

In the spirit of Halloween, I thought it would be a great opportunity to share some of the trending Halloween costumes worn by celebrities this year! A few costumes were already predicted this spooky season due to the buzz that was surrounding these trends this past year like the Barbie Movie.  According to the TODAY article I have attached below Kelsea Ballerini, “stepped out dressed as Margot Robbie’s Western Barbie while attending an event in New York City on Oct. 25. Ballerini looked picture-perfect in her pink cowgirl look, complete with bell-bottoms and a hat.” While there were definitely some highly anticipated costumes this year, there were some surprises as well. Kourtney Kardashian decided to have a little fun with her costume dressing as her sister, Kim Kardashian, in response to their feud playing out in their popular Hulu series this year.

While it may just seem like a costume, celebrities have to think about what will be their most iconic look. This relates to what we have been learning about in COMM 372 because Halloween is an extremely important time of year when audiences are highly anticipating what their favorite star will dress up as. Celebrities must take into account the current trends or what would create the most buzz in order to get their costume into headlines. Focusing on who their target audience is and dissecting their interests is helpful when piecing together the perfect spooky season outfit. Halloween costumes go viral all the time and give fans ideas on what they could wear for years to come.

Stories released about celebrity Halloween costumes can be either positive or negative. Most of the feedback in the TODAY article shows positive feedback highlighting several stars and what they decided on. For example the article states, “Jenner showed off a serious blond look while dressing as Marilyn Monroe in a series of pictures she shared Oct. 29 on Instagram. ‘Happy birthday mister president’, Jenner captioned the photos, referencing when Monroe famously sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to President John F. Kennedy in 1962.” As we can see not only are the costumes well thought out, but the social media posts are too, which is essential when attempting to create a viral look.

Overall, I thought that they Halloween costumes were pretty creative this year but I did not feel like there was a specific costume that stuck out to me. Take a look at some of the Spooky Season fits from this year below!

  1. I agree. Celebrities (and their PR folks) do a lot of research to come up with the best, least offending costume. Even politicians do as well. The last thing they want is to be trending in 2033 about what they wore in 2023. Crazy world.
