Story Development: An ice age apocalypse forces the remaining people to live underground in tunnels. Close quarters breeds disease and the lower the caste you were in the more likely you were to get sick. The hierarchy stayed safe in cleaner, more structurally sound tunnels. My character Denkiri meets Elizabeth while digging in one of the tunnels in search of more plants for her collection. They agree to help each other find a cure for the diseases plaguing the tunnels, using Denkiri’s “street smarts” and Elizabeth’s “book smarts”. They develop a friendship as Elizabeth helps Denkiri learn to communicate more effectively, and Denkiri helps Elizabeth connect to the world outside her “home”.
