Motivation: He wants to save anyone no matter the cost to himself or even his patients. He’ll try anything if he thinks it will help, even if it will more likely make things worse. His ultimate goal is a cure for death, but as a utilitarian, the majority of his time is spent operating on one patient at a time before death gets a foot in the door.

Story Development: The story of Doctor Beaumont Liston is deeply intertwined with the people around him. He was born in Scotland in the early 1800s where he resided until he was of college age when he went to Philadelphia to study medicine. Due to the earth freezing over, he was decidedly stuck in the United States and he made it his business to tend to anyone afflicted by the illnesses, explosions, and traumatic injuries that come along with dwelling in tunnels. His status as a surgeon is extremely rare in post-apocalypse society, so he is awake nearly around the clock operating on patients and speeding on cocaine. Saving lives is his driving force, and he will take any risk he thinks may help him keep people away from his bitter enemy, death. Sometimes these risks pay off, but often they do not. The primary tool in his surgical arsenal is a clockwork saw that he reverently named Spinny the Elder after one of the earliest recorded medicine men. He strikes up a friendship with Elizabeth because Doctor Liston loves children. He sees his own inquisitiveness in them, and he admires their idealism for how different it is from the cynical realism that he can’t escape, due to his daily battles with death. He later allies himself with The Stranger. They both seek to cure death by venturing above ground but die from exposure somewhere near Scotland.
