Acting and Advocating for Students’ Rights: Shaking Free of Deficit Views & Embracing Equity Views

The TRIO Training Academy is hosting Dr. Paul Gorski for a one–day workshop geared toward counselors, advisers, and other educational personnel.

Marginalized youth are pummeled with good intentions gone awry, centered on how we can “fix” the mindsets, grittiness, social-emotional wellbeing, and cultures of marginalized communities.  This workshop prioritizes the process of identifying inequities and casts a critical eye on any strategy or initiative meant ot “fix” something that isn’t broken about people who are the targets of those inequities.

Date:  April 23, 2019,  8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Location: HUB Flex Theater

Dr. Paul Gorski is the founder of the Equity Literacy Institute and EdChange.  He has spent nearly 25 years working with global educational organizations to build equitable learning environments.  He has taught at George Mason University, where he developed undergraduate and graduate programs in Social Justice and Human Rights.  Paul has written over 70 articles and has also written, co-written, or co-edited 12 books on various topics related to educational equity and justice.

This is a ticketed event that requires registration to attend. The program is free to Penn State employees, and $85 per registrant for non-Penn State employees.

Sponsored by the: Office of the Vice Provost for Educational Equity; Office of Diversity and Inclusion in the College of the Liberal Arts;Office of Multicultural Affairs in the College of Agricultural Sciences; Undergraduate Education Diversity Administration in the College of Health and Human Development; and Office of Diversity Enhancement in the Smeal College of Business.
