Blog #1- Marketing OD

Our first blog assignment for “Marketing Organization Development” prompts responses to the following questions:

  1. What have you learned about yourself in your previous classes that you feel will be important for you to keep in mind as you progress through this class?
  2. What do you see as the biggest challenge you would face in marketing yourself as an OD consultant?

One of the biggest learnings that I’ve received over the past year that I’ve been pursuing my Masters in OD&C is that I can successfully balance all of the “things” in my life.   Prior to this program, the thought of adding one more thing to my plate was enough to give me a panic attack.  I have a FT job which is very demanding, and then when I’m not at work, I’m 100% dedicated to my family.  Deciding to pursue my Masters was not an easy decision, because I feared that in order to successfully complete class requirements, it would force me to be inadequate in another place in my life.  Ultimately, I decided that there would, in fact, be no ‘good time’ to pursue my Masters, so I decided to close my eyes and jump in.  I was extremely happy to find that I was able to adjust some things here and there in order to regain balance of my priorities.  During the first week of a course, as I’m reading the syllabus and becoming more and more anxious for the time that I know I will need to devote to each lesson, I have to remind myself that I need to take one week at a time.

One of the biggest challenges that I foresee in marketing myself as an OD consultant relates to what I mentioned above…time.  I would anticipate that there is a tremendous amount of time necessary to prepare a pitch to key decision makers in an organization in order to gain their business as an OD consultant.  I’m hopeful that this course will shed light on how overwhelming and time consuming this actually is for OD consultants when marketing their services.
