In today’s political climate, politicians have to be more careful than ever about the message they’re sending to the voters. Everything they say and do, right down to their campaign music can impact the results of the election. This is a universally known fact, yet right-winged politicians continue to use Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” as a campaign anthem even though the song’s meaning is the opposite of its title.
The second verse of the song reads, “got in a little hometown jam, so they put a rifle in my hand, sent me off to a foreign land, to go and kill the yellow man.” The song goes on to discuss Springsteen’s distaste for the war in Vietnam, and how veterans had struggles getting jobs when returning to the states. Essentially, it paints a picture of a government that sees its young citizens as cogs in a war machine, that they’re disposable and the government doesn’t care what happens to them. Now, for a pro-war, pro-veteran party such as Republicans, why would they continue to use this song as their anthems? While the song title and image look very patriotic, this song is anything but that. It sends a message that these politicians are only looking at the surface meaning of things, not what they actually represent. If someone running for office can’t take the time to listen to the lyrics of a song, or hire someone to do it, how can we trust them to create laws that impact our lives? #TurningPolitical

My mom LOVES Bruce Springsteen and has this image on a T-shirt that she wears to bed all the time. She’d find this article so interesting and I’m definitely sharing it with her. Thanks!
