When does the TSM Backup service end it’s life?
TSM will reach its End of Life (EoL) on March 31st, 2019.
For current TSM users, TSM will remain fully functional until October 4th. At this time it will become “Read-only”. No new backups will be allowed to happen to the legacy servers and data will only be available for restore.
When will you stop supporting desktops?
The provisioning of new desktop operating system nodes (as defined by our OS list) is being discontinued effective immediately.
Existing TSM desktop nodes will be able to perform backups and restores until October 4th. At this time it will become “Read-only”. No new backups will be allowed to happen to the legacy servers and data will only be available for restore.
What if my system is currently under litigation hold?
Provisioning for all systems under litigation hold, (including those running desktop operating systems) as ordered by OIS or Legal Counsel, will be supported until the end of the service’s life.
After TSM Backup service has been discontinued, data under litigation hold will be place into long-term storage until the litigation hold is lifted. It will be available for use in litigation following an order from OIS or legal, but retrieval from long-term storage may involve significant time and cost. It will not be available for disaster recover, backup, or records retention purposes.
What happens to my data?
If you are utilizing TSM as a storage solution, you will need to perform a restore of your data prior to the end of the service’s life. UBI is intended to serve as a disaster recovery solution only.
To continue backing up your system for disaster recovery with EIT, you will need to begin service with UBI.
How long can non-desktop systems remain on TSM?
Existing TSM nodes will be able to perform backups and restores until October 4th. At this time it will become “Read-only”. No new backups will be allowed to happen to the legacy servers and data will only be available for restore.
To continue disaster recovery services with EIT, you will need to begin service with UBI.
When will UBI be ready to begin service?
UBI was deployed university-wide on April 1, 2018.

How can I continue to back up my desktop?
The provisioning of new desktop operating system nodes within the legacy TSM environment has been discontinued, and will be unavailable in UBI.
For those needs, a new service – Code42’s CrashPlan – is available for departmental (as opposed to individual) purchase. Departments are required to assign a person to the role of Organizational Administrator (Org Admin). The Org Admin, along with Code42, will provide support for this product. CrashPlan utilizes a centrally located appliance for administration and authentication, cloud for data storage, and a client on the end point machine. Centralized support, as it relates to the appliance, is available to the Org Admins.
For more information about purchasing licenses for your department, please contact Timothy White (tdw11), Sr. Software Contract Administrator, Software at Penn State, or see https://software.psu.edu/.
