The service we commonly refer to as TSM, the legacy infrastructure for distributed backup, will reach its End of Life (EoL) on December 31st, 2018. It will be succeeded by the University Backup for Infrastructure (UBI) service. We are prepared to deploy UBI University-wide. No new nodes will be created in TSM after April 1st, 2018.
The provisioning of new desktop operating system nodes within the legacy TSM environment has been discontinued, and will be unavailable in UBI. For those needs, a new service – Code42’s CrashPlan – is available for departmental (as opposed to individual) purchase. Departments are required to assign a person to the role of Organizational Administrator (Org Admin). The Org Admin, along with Code42, will provide support for this product. CrashPlan utilizes a centrally located appliance for administration and authentication, cloud for data storage, and a client on the end point machine. Centralized support, as it relates to the appliance, is available to the Org Admins. For more information about purchasing licenses for your department, please contact Timothy White (tdw11), Sr. Software Contract Administrator, Software at Penn State, or see https://software.psu.edu/.
For current TSM users, TSM will remain fully functional until September 1st. At this time it will become “Read-only”. No new backups will be allowed to happen to the legacy servers and data will only be available for restore. The Storage group will work with existing TSM customers to establish new UBI nodes. This will require you to upgrade to a supported version of Spectrum Protect and point the client to the new server.
The TSM self-service portal will not be compatible with the new UBI service. To change your password, or request information about your nodes, you can submit a Service Now ticket at https://pennstate.service-now.com/sp?id=sc_cat_item&sys_id=b7f0248f0f11b6002c4900dce1050eb8
We will temporarily be offering UBI services at no charge until we have the capability to bill for the service.
