The primary point of this reading is to learn about the various points of view of pornography and obscene works, read about instances of censorship of the arts by government institutions. I identify with Julie Van Camp. On page 29 of our text she says, “I am pro-free speech, but I would not call myself pro-pornography. The primary point of these readings is to becoming more familiar with the issues related to Realism. If art is to be beautiful, have purpose, evoke emotions and serve as a messenger for meaning, then it needs to be genuine. Kitsch is not art in a realism sense because it over exaggerates and panders to a commercial view point. It does not depict an imitation of nature or reality. The primary point of this reading is to become familiar with the beliefs of Plato and Aristotle. Their views of art shaped the way it was developed and interpreted. The reading is easy to understand. The reading goes into detail about the similarities and differences in interpretation of art by Plato and Aristotle. Plato was anti-art. He was the first to recognize the power of art and that it could be used in harmful ways against society.
