Describe your relationship with the domestic and heritage language learners in your Arabic class.

I: uh in terms of your relationships uh with other students both heritage and domestic how do you think those help or hinder your experiences in the classroom

K: um I’m actually a lot (.) closer to (.) the domestic learners which is kinda funny because I mean those are just like the girls I sit by and so we have really closer relationship kind of because we’re in class together every day and like we sit together and we study together and all that kinda thing and I know that a couple there’s like two or three other heritage language learners in my class and like they can call up their parents and be like blah blah blah like just stuff about class whereas my mom is like huh what she doesn’t speak any Arabic and my dad is like that’s not how I grew up with it and then my best friend’s in Virginia now and he’s like I would help you but I’m in Virginia I’m like ok great so I just kind of (.) go at it by myself

Reflections – Do you find it surprising that Kat, a heritage language learner, identifies more closely with the domestic learners? What types of relationships have you observed in your classroom between learners from different backgrounds?
