Do you feel that the teacher treats the heritage language learners in your class differently from the domestic language learners?

I: do you notice anything in the class do you do you notice u:h whether the teacher (.) deals with him differently from the way he deals with ( )

N: no I think it’s completely equal

I: uh huh

N: he just he calls on people randomly to say different words and he does a good job randomizing that so no ones like, you know, getting picked on I guess

I: uh huh

N: um but no I haven’t really seen anything that would be (.) different I’d say he’s just the same as everyone else cuz even though he is a heritage learner and he’s got this background in it he doesn’t know it the same as you know we’re all started learning the language on the same level um so he’s in the same boat I guess

Reflections – Both Doug and Nick feel that heritage language learners have an advantage over domestic learners by exposure and access to authentic input through their families. Does this perception affect the self-confidence of the domestic learners and, thus, their performance in the classroom? If so, how have you dealt with this challenge?
