Describe your relationship with the domestic and heritage language learners in your Korean class.

I: And what about your relationships with the students, the other students in class—how are they?

S: We’re a big, crazy group, yeah. We go to lunch together and just hang out together. It’s, we really are close, like I don’t think I would call anyone, like, and not have, “Hey let’s go out.” Like, “Ok.” So I mean, we’ve, we are pretty close to each other.

I: Was there any kind of division between people who were Asian or Asian-looking and people of–

S: No. No. I mean, we had two students, I mean, they just kind of grow together, so, you know, of course they were closer to each other. We had a set of twins, so of course they’re going to be closer to each other, um, but we all interacted with each other, Asians, non-Asians, just big happy family. ((laughing))

I: Yeah, isn’t that, isn’t that great? Right. Right.

S: Yeah, it’s nice. Yeah. It’s different from any other foreign languages, so, that way.

I: So then you anticipate this spring that you’ll start again?

S: Yeah, I’m not sure if they’re going to offer Korean 4, so I’ll have to wait to see if they do offer it, if they do and if it please fits in my schedule, I will so sign up for it.

I: And then your plan is to graduate in the spring?

S: No, actually in the fall, so, yeah. ((laughing))

I: And, and do you think that uh, what major are you?

S: Bio-behavioral health.

I: Oh my goodness.

S: Yeah. ((laughing))

I: Oh that’s interesting. Do you think that you’ll make the connect with the Korean language in your profession?

S: Oh, yeah, definitely, I think so, yeah. ‘Cause I, I want to go overseas, you know, study diseases and stuff like that, so definitely, yeah. Korean’s coming up. Yeah, it’s get—getting really big, and…

Reflections – Listen to Eric 1, Lindsey 2, and Sara 2 describe their classmates in terms of interpersonal relationships and classification as heritage or domestic students. Would you anticipate these responses? How would you characterize the relationships in your classroom? In what ways do these relationships help or hinder student learning?
