Does the teacher use different instructional practices based on the background of the language learner?

I: how about the way that the instructor teaches can you do you perceive there are different activities or strategies that are used

S: mmhm she definitely has the uh the heritage learners uh maybe when we’re watching a film they’ll go up and she’ll ask them to write any vocab on the board that may be the domestic learners don’t know and they’re always in charge of translating um things that she pretty much knows that the domestic learners aren’t very comfortable with or materials that we she knows that we don’t understand as well as they do she has them help us rather than herself going out of her way to kind of help them reinforce what they know

Reflections – Compare student responses in Rebecca 2, Sam 3 & 4, Serem, and Will 2 & 3. What do you find interesting about the students’ reactions? Do your instructional practices vary depending on the students’ background? Have you experienced difficulties in preparing lessons and assessments that meet the needs of both your domestic and heritage students? What strategies have you tried? Which do you find the most effective?
