What are your goals as an Arabic language learner?

I:   so what are your goals after this course so once you complete this course then then what , where do you go from

N: oh ok I’m I’m definitely planning to take Arabic two and continuing until I’m completely proficient I wanna be a fluent Arabic speaker hopefully

I:   uh huh N: um, and yeah I I I’ve scheduled Arabic two so hopefully I can do good enough in this course advance in that excuse me an um, and just keep going on until until I understand it completely I’m taking a few other, I wanna take a few other Islam course, courses so I can understand the whole scope of Arabic cuz the language, it, I find it to be unique because the language is just the language just spoken but it means so much and to the culture it’s such a it’s so intertwined versus English you know it is just the language and the culture is just separate this is just the language is originated from the culture and it stayed together throughout the centuries and it’s been around I think that’s unique so I wanna- so through my you know whole Arabic two three I don’t know how high it goes but I hope to learn about the culture and then and then the language in the same and how they connect each other.

Reflections – Do your students share similar goals to these students? What are your students’ future plans as language learners? Do they plan to continue their language studies, apply them in a professional capacity, and/or travel abroad? In your experience how do student goals relate to their motivation as language learners? Are there ways in which you adjust the emphasis of your lessons to reflect the needs of their future goals? For instance, all of these students plan to study, volunteer, or work abroad at some point in the near or not so distant future, do you or might you emphasize different skills or tailor activity themes? What resources might you make available, in or outside of the classroom in order to support/facilitate their future plans? Do you feel this type of preparation is an appropriate role for a language course or language teacher?
