What are your future career plans as a major in Russian?

I: what’s your major

W: I’m a Russian major

I: what do you plan to do with that

W: well my plans right now are to go back uh and getting a nursing degree and then perhaps become a nurse practitioner, I’m also interested in perhaps spending sometime doing volunteer work in some of the former soviet republics um just because their standard of care is not at the same level and I’ve spoken with uh my professor actually about this and uh her husband is um I guess an advanced practice nurse in Ukraine and so she said that there was a possibility that if I could have some sponsor here allow me to deliver certain uh maybe like supplies or some such thing or uh old equipment that we no longer use uh and you know then they would allow me to practice there on uh sort of uh limited basis but I’d like to help out in some way

Reflections – Do your students share similar goals to these students? What are your students’ future plans as language learners? Do they plan to continue their language studies, apply them in a professional capacity, and/or travel abroad? In your experience how do student goals relate to their motivation as language learners? Are there ways in which you adjust the emphasis of your lessons to reflect the needs of their future goals? For instance, all of these students plan to study, volunteer, or work abroad at some point in the near or not so distant future, do you or might you emphasize different skills or tailor activity themes? What resources might you make available, in or outside of the classroom in order to support/facilitate their future plans? Do you feel this type of preparation is an appropriate role for a language course or language teacher?
